For those of you who want a good fly-through of the new International Terminal, check out the video on the following YYC web page:

Reminds me quite a bit of the International terminal in Hong Kong.

I agree. It looks very similar to Hong Kong's airport, and the exterior really reminds me of Bangkok's airport.

In the arrivals terminal by the WestJet arrival gate (D wing) they have small scale models of the entire finished project. Puts perspective of how big the new runway is! 4.3km I think! If I remember I will snap some pictures at work tonight and post them in the morning.

How long is our current main runway? (The one that runs north/south.)

Its pretty cool to think the Runway is long enough to reach from the Calgary Tower to Chinook Mall.

Isn't YYC the #3 alternative landing spot for the shuttle or something like that?

I think there was always something about us being a backup for the shuttle, but apparently based on our location the chances of it ever happening were pretty slim.

So its actually longer than our main one, and the main one was long enough to be an alternate shuttle ending? Badass.
Why so long? (other than the obvious "why not?")

I would think someone like Big Time could answer this better than I, however I would assume it's to give more clearance for the heavies
While the current runway is sufficient, a longer runway would probably make landing easier (wouldn't have to touchdown as early) and takeoff easier as well (don't some planes eat up the entire runway on a hot summer's day? A few extra hundred feet would be nice).
But perhaps the answer is simply, to provide easier access for the A380, or new generation 747's (not necessarily as a main visitor but as an alternate?)
Of course this is all speculation on my behalf.

A longer runway benefits all aircraft at our altitude here in Calgary. It allows for airliners and other aircraft to use de-rated takeoffs in which they can use less engine power for takeoff to save on engine wear and tear (plus fuel). Plus as Maritime Q-Scout mentioned when we get the higher density altitudes in the summer it can make things easier by having that extra pavement for the takeoff.
Realistically YYC can handle the A380 on our current runway 16/34, the only impediment to operations would probably be on the taxiways and apron areas around the terminal due to the wingspan and size of the aircraft. Right now YYC handles 747-400 aircraft from Cargolux and Korean Cargo on a regular basis.
However there is no reason to ever expect to see a regularly scheduled A380 into YYC, we may get the odd one diverting here on the way to the west coast of the US, but that is about it.
