Just so flawed. But it was explained to me that it was better this way because it removed a human bias. It's as if they were created as ammunition for message board discussions. No coach would ever give them any credence. They are just completely useless.
As for the attempted shots quoted last night. How can one accurately tell what a player is attempting to do? A player can have a puck on his stick and "think" shot a few times in any given sequence. He could head fake, shoot a slap pass, change his mind because of traffic, goalie being set etc.

I've been harping on advanced stats since they were used to show that Conklin was better than Brodeur. Years later we have a lot more of them and they seem to get more and more useless.
LOL....ahhh....ye old mudcrutch was it not?

Hilarious stuff.

At this point the best return would be Seattle taking him in the expansion draft.

...I'd still expose Backlund ahead of healthy scratch Sam Bennett. We need get away from that Backlund contract.

The Bennett saga reminds me of the situation with Sven. The only difference is that the Flames were smart enough to ship Sven out of the organization relatively quickly.

That trade broke CP IIRC.

If anyone can fix Sam it’s Daryl. Let’s see what happens. Maybe we can salvage that 4OA.

Sutter is the type of coach that Bennett needs if he's gonna amount to any type of player that can have a lengthy career in the league.

Be interesting if Sutter can revive Bennett or if it's too late. Be good to have him consistent within our top 9. If so, will he still be exposed in expansion draft or traded?

At least Bennett seems on board with a reset here in Flames silks.

... or he has made himself so worthless to other GMs that the Flames can’t get anything for him at his cap hit. If he wants off this team he needs to increase his value or quit hockey. Hopefully he is smart enough to understand that.

Its already been more lengthy than the average NHLer.

The one thing that has been clear under the other coaches is Bennett seemed confused about his role and that seemed to come to a head with Ward. Everything we have heard about Sutter is he is black and white so Bennett will need to play the role he is given.

Also, Sutter rewards effort. That should play into Bennett's hand quite well.

I hope it does and that Bennett delivers the effort we know he's capable of.

I think at times there's been a pretty big disconnect between Bennett playing well but randomly being demoted (claiming Chris Stewart on waivers...). Or Bennett being tossed around the line-up with what looks like no actual purpose.

Give the guy the role, if he plays well and excels at it then see if you can't grow it beyond that - but deliver some consistency and reward him if he earns it.

Sutter rewards effort if you execute. If you put in effort but make stupid plays - like dumping the puck from behind your own net into the slot where a defenseman is already covered - Sutter tends to sit you down and let you think long and hard about what you did. All the effort in the world doesn't matter if you're a bonehead.

clearly you never watched how much "boneheaded" stuff Jake Muzzin got away with under Sutter.

Maybe. If he ups his effort in his own zone.

This is Bennett's career here. I have no doubt he'll play hard, and that Sutter will give him a chance. He's smart enough to realize that if he fails due to lack of effort, his career earning potential will fall dramatically. That should be a motivating factor to anyone. I'm sure he'll put up better numbers, I just wonder how much because I think his skills have diminished over the years from lack of trust on management's end (and partially due to his bad plays).
