Atrocious and apathetic start, and that's the biggest reason the Flames lost. Turnovers cost them tonight as well, and Markstrom looked human tonight (not terrible, just human).

Play like they did in periods 2 and 3, and the Flames will win most of their games. They just have to knock off the random periods they take completely off. They were lucky not to be down by more in the first as I thought that the Leafs missed on a couple of shots early.

That shot by Muzzin was classless. Everyone knows you don't do that. I don't care if Tkachuk went ballistic and had a temper tantrum walking off the ice - showing emotion after a loss is an ok thing to do.

a lot has to do with the quality of chances against...he was average at best though but even the best aren't going to steal every game.

He did not have a great game but he has been stellar so far and none of those goals were bad like we have seen from Rittich. Sometimes the team needs to bail out the goalie.

Tonight Mikheyev embarrasses the officials and the Leafs capitalize. Wicked shot on an undeserved PP

Anderson did make an awesome save and Markstrom wasn’t the best goalie tonight

But it isn’t ever nice to see sleazes rewarded

Still early in the season only one game didn't get the bounces.

Almost every single player was awful in the 1st period.

Shame on them.

The absolute primary reason for the loss.

Yeah. We can bank on Lucic being bad, Bennett being bad - but Backlund has been bad this season. If that guy is on the decline (reasonable as it may be given his age), we’re in a lot of trouble.

The support “veterans” have been junk so far this season.

I agree. And tonight, Ward gave Toronto's best players a chance to be the deciders

It’s a massive red flag that our coach thought Lucic needed more ice time because a fluke deflection landed right on his stick in the slot

Felt like he was out there more than anyone in the third and matched against good lines

Backlund must be frustrated with what he’s been asked to work with

I think mangipane is starting to try to be a one man show this year . Doesn't seem to use his teammates this season so far.

Valimaki doesn't look like his old NHL self so far
I was expecting him to be as good as nesterov and vice versa. My biggest fear was getting back on smaller ice and I remember posters saying the transition quoting
verbatiem would be" flawless". Not seeing it so far. Early on but let's see what he does

Not digging Levio, Nordstrom, Bennett, Simone Mangipane ( seems selfish this year) Lucic and Valimaki.

Ward was the reason they were down 2-0 after the first period?

Was he he the reason they won the last 2 periods?

I think not!

Well, there were a lot of factors.

The first was brutal, for sure

But in a 1 goal game, that 1 goal simply doesn’t happen if the refs have some grasp on physics. That dive should have been a Calgary PP. Not to mention the resulting momentum shift

I think you are assuming that Ward is competent as a head coach. The difference between a competent head coach and an elite head coach may be small, but the difference between Ward and his counterparts seems quite large. There is a reason the guy hadn't been a head coach in 14 years. The little pro head coaching experience he did have was completely mediocre.

Trelieving has had three "I'm smarter than everyone" coaching hires. Just hire someone with a history of success.
