Default Wifi Signal boost

we just installed Telus Optik system in our home. Internet/TV.

We have great signal in our home for the Wifi except in our basement.

I need to boost the signal for the basement. Is there a wireless signal booster out there that someone could recommend.

My only other option is to run CAT-5 from the router all around my house and then into the basement and hook up an extender. This will involve drilling holes and running cable. Not something I want to do.

The router and the place where I need to get WiFi access are two points that are probably the further place apart.

Thoughts?

Get a powerline adapter, it works great.

Edit: only works if you plug into it, so if you are looking for wireless then don't go that rout.

Run 2 APs with the same SSID?

Can you run CAT5 through a cold air return? Or if your house is 10+ years old, is there an open space beside the furnace chimney?

Thanks for the input guys.

Ken, we have hot water heating. Sadly, that idea is out. But it was good one.

Telus will provide an access point to extend wifi in the home.

They have to hardwire it in at my home and run cable all around the outside of the house. I didnt want to do that.

I second the DLink DAP 1320 ... have one in my house as well.

You might just have to unplug it and plug it back in every couple days but that takes about a minute and it resets the adapter and starts working wonderfully again. Also dont throw out the manual that comes with it...it contains the default information you need. maybe take a pic and store it on your phone or laptop. or email it to yourself.

I'm sure there is a non-apple solution as well but I had the same problem. I use an Airport Extreme as my main router and link an Airport Express as an extender in the basement. Works flawlessly.

I find that I have to unplug it quite often now like every few hours during the night, its quite painful. It did work wonders for the first few months but Im starting to wonder whats wrong with mine.

Any recommendations on wifi signal boosters? I currently have Shaw and the internet is decent in my house except in my bonus room which has a really weak signal. Any tips on devices to use and positioning of these devices?

Are you using the built in wifi on Shaw's modem? I had mine on the main floor of our two storey (2200 sq ft) and the wifi in the bonus room sucked. I decided to try out my old Netgear Nighthawk router and now wifi is great everywhere.

In summary their modem sucks as a wifi router, cheapest is probably to get a decent router.

I have this Shaw modem

LOL that is the one that I have. If I switch to a 3rd party router, does Shaw have to do anything on their end or do I have to create a whole new network?

The modem is super easy to put into bridge mode yourself https://support.shaw.ca/t5/internet-...eway/ta-p/5754

You lose use of the fancy bluecurve app on your phone if you use or care about it.

I made the SSID and pass on the new router the same as the Shaw one and most of my devices automatically picked it up.

I think there's some stuff in this thread https://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=122942 about how to deal with the wireless cable boxes, but I don't have cable so didn't have to worry about that.

I bridged my Shaw modem into a mesh network. There is no way I can go back to having dead zones or super low speeds in certain areas of my home.

I asked the same question last month and ended up with that. It works incredibly well... gives the performance of a much more expensive system.

Firstly, get a mesh system and bridge the router. Don’t mess with repeaters or cables.

Second, taottronics makes routers now. Wow. They make everything. That said I am a bit nervous about Chinese made electronics that see all you home traffic.

Look at a google nest wifi, or eero, or netgear orbi they are more pricey but it will perform well and will be safer from a security perspective
