Yes exactly. I'm trying to make a slightly more balanced malt ala Ralfy, otherwise this Smokehead would be on my shelf for years.

I'm hoping that I can turn the Glenfiddich 12 into something more interesting and stretch out that large bottle. That way I don't need to dip into my Ardbeg, Lagavulin, and Laphroaig stocks which are dwindling rapidly.

I'm a big fan of peated whiskeys, but Ardberg is one I just don't find very palatable. Just more of a metallic taste in their product. It's also the only whiskey that stings after the first 2 sips. I find it takes almost 2 full pours before I don't notice that sting anymore.

Not scotch, but has any one tried Angel's Envy that recently made it's way to Calgary?

Only now? That's a shame, it's an excellent spirit. One of my favorites.
On another note, I've been getting into Irish Whiskeys recently. They are definitely a bit sweeter and less complex in flavor, but still very tasty. A step above American whiskies still. My favorite so far is Redbreast, but I'm open to hearing some new suggestions.

I bought some last week. I like it. I'm not an aficionado though.

I tried the Lohin McKinnon a couple years ago. It’s a Canadian single malt peated whiskey made by Central City brewing in Vancouver.
Highly recommend.

Yeah, Irish whiskeys aren't as complex, but they're easy sipping and feels a lot more casual which is nice at times.
I've been a fan of Writer's tears copper pot since I stumbled upon a mini bottle of it in Canmore more than 5 years or so ago. One of the flavour notes IMO is indeed tears. This flavour note is usually quite apt during periods of contemplation and concentration so I often like have a little of it while reading or writing.
The "tears" flavour isn't as weird as it sounds. To me it's kinda like a much weaker salt/iodine/seaweed like flavour that one would attribute to Laphroaig, but it doesn't really taste like a dilution of that flavour profile. Oddly, I don't think I've ever seen a review mention that there's a reminiscence of tears when drinking this stuff. However, I have read a few other reviews that they like the name and that they too enjoy sipping the stuff while reading a book and whatnot.

Regarding the Angel's Envy, I guess I was expecting a bit more out of it. Maybe it's subtle and I didnt' catch what makes it great. I thought it was good, but didn't live up to what I expected I suppose.
Regarding Irish, I really enjoy Jameson Black Barrel. Highly recommend.

Redbreast 21 is one of the best whiskies in the world. I actually prefer it over any Pappy, William Larue, or even Springbank 21.
It's bloody perfect IMO.

How pricey? 21 years tend to be ridiculously expensive. Is it worth the price tag?

Compared to other 21yr, it's accessible. It's $220 here (in calgary) at KWM, which is the same as the Springbank 18.

Has anyone tried this one before? I've tried the 20 year (I think it was) and the 12 year and both IMO reminded me heavily of Glenfarclass (or at least stuff very specifically in that flavour range of the whiskey flavour chart).
This one I assume is going to be much of the same range but a bit better due to age mellowing the spirit out a bit?

Not scotch but my dad gave me a bottle of Texas Yellow Rose Whiskey, I usually just drink whisky straight from the bottle. But this is a really nice smooth sipping whiskey that doesn't need anything, it doesn't have a strong after taste to it and has a nice smokey flavor to it.

How did you get the Pappy? Only person I've ever heard of getting a bottle was through a lottery while living in the US.

I wonder if he just got an opportunity to try it at a specific establishment.
I had a buddy who said he somehow lucked out in the States and was able to acquire a single shot of Pappy for like $200 USD.
I asked a buddy who lives in the States to toss his name into the lottery like 3-4 years ago. He's unlikely to get a call, but you never know. I just want to try it once and say I've had it.
