I just lost power and Wi-fi here in Calgary for about 7 minutes.
I stand in solidarity with the Maritimes. Stay strong!!

My folks summer spot is just up the road from Port Hood (home of Al MacInnis) in Dunvegan.
I'm in Sydney (shown on the map). So far it's just rain.
I'd uoad pictures/videos but it's nothing interesting, not yet anyway.

Text only CBC site, can be easier on your device batteries and loads with less data (but it's CBC so you may become a raging leftie liberal, use caution):

Port Hood references galore. I got family that has a vacation home on the beach there. Almost on the beach. Geeze I hope they will be good

I think the only positive is this storm look to be "missing" the Greater Halifax area.
While that's little comfort for those in it's path, it would be a lot worse if the eye was aimed dead at Halifax harbour.

Jesus christ...cat 4 is serious business.
Please, take this seriously and stock up. You can expect to be without power for 1-2 weeks with that sort of catastrophic damage. I would also recommend hammering plywood over your windows if you don't have hurricane glass, which I'm assuming is 100% of East Coast Canada. Just the wind gusts alone can break glass.
The last time I emerged after a cat 4/5 I saw giant trees uprooted and pulled across the landscape. Think of the force it takes to do that. Make your home a fortress, and stock it well.
Take care everyone.

I would be surprised if 10% had hurricane rated glass, I had a hard time getting my friends and relatives to duct tape their large windows let alone put plywood up. Simply put maritimers aren’t used to these type of storms.
Some will be having a hurricane party tonight.

I'm having a Hurricane party tonight!!
Wait...do you have to be in the Maritimes?
Oh. Now celebrating a Hurricane thats smoking the other side of the country appears to be in poor form.

Don't take my sense of humor as not taking it seriously.
It's projected to be 150-160kmh winds. So really Cat 1 when it gets here.
Still more than what we're used to.
We're ready for a few days without power. Both my folks and my wife's parents have generators.
A few more hours until the wind picks up. I'll try and keep you posted.

Tape on windows is actually a bad idea. It doesn't reinforce the window at all and can hold the glass together into larger, more dangerous pieces if the window does break.

It's now 7am.
We lost power at about 2am.
Lots of tree branches are down. The tree in our side yard that I've wanted to take down for years, Fiona did it for me.
Pictures to follow when I get up and moving.

Already starting to get quite windy here in Corner Brook, NL (West Coast) and we are not supposed to get the worst of it until 9 tonight.
