I wouldn't be surprised if these projections are a bit conservative. I like this for the Flames if we can get Lindholm, Weegar and Hanifin signed before the cap hits $92 mil

Also, this could hurt the Oilers as the biggest jump could come right when their 2 stars need to be re-signed.

Would be hilarious if the NHL gave these projections so teams can start planning to have the cap space available to take a run at getting McDavid out of Edmonton.

The timing of these things can change things for a franchise quite dramatically. The Penguins were able to sneak in a 12 year contract for Crosby just before a major rule change. That rule change could change the success of that franchise if it was put in 1 year earlier.

The Flames can re-sign Lindholm and Hanifin before the big jump in cap is announced but the Oilers stars will have more firm numbers announced before they can re-sign.

The Flames cap will be tight for the next 2 years after this year but some of their top prospects will still be on ELC's the first year there is a big jump.

Zary has 3 years left on ELC and if Coronato signs a 2 year ELC after this season he also will have 1 year left after the first big jump. Their value goes up because of this.

Oilers top 2 prospects are probably Broberg and Holloway, both are RFA's by the time they get a big jump.

Man, forget about Gaudreau and Tkachuk... Losing Lindholm would be absolutely devastating.

Wouldn't it help the Oilers if just as they need to re-sign the big 2, they get a big boost to the dollars available to them on their cap?

Nothing can help the oilers.

If they are able re sign them both then that'll use up all the cap boost and they'll still be the same 2 man no good team.

That’s great news for the Flames. If the projections are true, then that big jump from ‘23-24 to ‘24-25 is pretty much Lindholm’s raise.

Not really. At some point the Oilers are going to realize they will not be able to ice a team with 2 players making a combined 30m (16m and 14m is my guess) and 1 9.25m player that is a #3/4 on a lot of teams. That’s 40m amongst 3 players, assuming they sign McDavid and Draisaitl to what I assume they’ll receive. They’re lucky McDavid was kind enough to only get 100m over 8 years and getting lucky banking on Draisaitl improving year after year and taking 8.5m (which at the time was an overpayment).

This just makes MacKinnon’s contract even better.

As the Cap goes up usually the cap hit top players ask for does as well.

Players in 2 years under $88 mil cap won't be asking for the same money as top players are now. I'd bet Leon gets more than Mackinnon just got this season. So IMO advantage Colorado.

$92 cap I could see McDavid getting $15 mil

Unless they both take a discount to win but if they do why would they do that in Edmonton?

I could see him asking for the max if he keeps up the current offensive output. At 92M that's 18.4 per season. Mcdavid in his 30s making 18 million after playing 30 minutes a night every season would be awesome.

The other disadvantage the Oilers have is I doubt Leon re-signs a year early. I just don't see him doing that until he knows the Oilers can keep McDavid. So the last year of Leon's contract if he chooses to wait to see if McDavid re-signs he will be a UFA. That's a tough spot to be in for them and with a big bump in the cap there will be some teams that could throw huge money at him.

All the more reason to get Weegzie signed long term. If Hampus Lindholm money is what it takes to get it done, I'm on board with it.

McDavid is going to Toronto as UFA once Matthews heads back to the desert.

Possible I suppose but I wouldn't rule out any major US franchise.

What a risk that would be. Imagine being one of the most dominate offensive talents of all time, and spending your career split between Edmonton and Toronto, and retiring cup-less. What a legacy.

There’s a market in estimating a growing cap. I don’t see the NHL having the growth everyone thinks they will have.

The NHL and NHLPA don't build arenas. Are you suggesting they should donate their money to build one here?
