That's pretty awesome news about De Havilland.

Well it's not exactly a 1 for 1 swap. An electric car uses approx. 6 times more minerals than an ICE car...I imagine an airplane would have some sort of similar disparity.

Mineral supply is a very legitimate concern towards EV transition goals. We'll probably need hundreds of new mines around the world to meet the increased demand for nickel, lithium, cobalt etc.
https://i2.wp.com/www.benchmarkminer...g?w=1208&ssl=1

And the reason people don't care about existing mineral mining is because it's mostly out of sight and out of mind in Chile or Africa or some other far away locale. I imagine that if the world wants to reach these EV goals, us in the West will have to start shouldering more of the mining burden moving forward. As we should, for all the various ethical, business and energy-security reasons.

I'd think EV's are going to use a lot more aluminum as well, since weight is really an issue with batteries. A lot of the Tesla "frame" parts are cast aluminum.

This is massive news - 1,500 skilled jobs is huge. I've seen a constant stream of white collar management jobs in various disciplines being posted on LinkedIn for the last 8 months by DHC.

The question is - in a labour shortage - where are these skilled machinists going to come from? Boeing had an existing manufacturing base to tap into when they moved to Charleston - that's not the case here. I suspect the existing Viking workforce is included in this 1,500 (got to love PR embellishment) but there's still a new net gap.

Further more - it's 37.2km (33min) by car from DT Calgary to where I think the new plant will be. That's not going to help.

So they are basically building a new airport to service the facility? Wonder why they didn't go to an existing facility like Red Deer or Lethbridge? Or even Springbank or Villeneuve.

Nevertheless, this is positive news.

Lots of land in that area, nice and close to YYC for cargo logistics (and rail logistics close by too). Springbank could have been an issue with potential NIMBY pushback. I'm glad they are setting up so close to the city. Looking at their video it appears they even have plans for a De Havilland fleet museum on the site. Pretty cool.

Also with the amount of flying they will be doing with test flights, checks flights etc it's nice to be somewhat isolated and not impeding commercial traffic.

I'm sure there's some government innovation/new project cash that was accessible as well.

WestJet ramps up fleet with purchase of 42 more airplanes

That's pretty significant. Or will this be more of replacing the NGs as their leases expire. Still, the MAX10 is a bigger aircraft (I think). Gotta wonder about the long term fate of the 787's.

Their oldest planes that will be exiting first are 737-700 with 132 seats, and we expect these new planes to have around 200 seats. With such a large order, this really marks a shift in strategy for WestJet and it will be interesting to see how it shakes out.

2 rare vintage planes collide at Dallas air show. No word on casualties yet.

B-17 and P-63 according to AP. Warning the videos are disturbing.

Accident unfolding in Lima, Peru. LATAM A320neo on its takeoff roll strikes a vehicle on the runway (looks like a fire truck).

It looks like the fire truck was going pretty fast too. Is that a cloud of dust behind it? Seems like a really strange situation with the other vehicles following it. My brain immediately went to "someone hijacked the fire truck and was joyriding around the airfield".

Hopefully the fact the fire truck was hit from behind and not broadsided offered the firefighters some protection.
