Took these photographs yesterday west of Clairsholm. The Tree Swallow and Western Meadowlarks are easy to find. The Mountain Bluebird and the Wilson's Snipe, not so much.

A Swainson's Hawk. This species migrates in the fall, from the Canadian Prairies, all the way down to the lower regions of South America (Argentinian grasslands) which is a 9600 km journey. While migrating the hawk averages 200km per day. This hawk has a wingspan of 1.4 meters.

Highland cattle.

Alberta is famous for it's beef but this is one cattle breed you don't see a lot of here.
Highland cattle are a Scottish cattle breed. They have long horns and long wavy coats that are coloured black, brindle, red, yellow, white, silver or dun, and they are raised primarily for their meat.

Photographed yesterday west of Clairsholm near one of the backroad trails into the Porcupine Hills.

House Finch. Photo taken in my front yard. Sometimes you don't have to go far to get a great photo.

Swainson's Hawks. I saw 8 today.

This one was photgraphed sitting in a tree across from Fort Calgary on 9th Ave.

These two are sitting side x side in the same tree. I assume they're a breeding pair. I photographed these two just outside of Okotoks.

This was taken May 15, the day highway 66 opened on a not very popular trail. I think I was the first person in the area this year. There were no other human tracks or dog prints anywhere. So I think it was a wolf track and a grizzly track all in one. Just hanging out. Being friends I'm sure.

Snapped this on a walk, yesterday.

A spider munching on a bee. The spider picked a prime location to spin its web, located next to some flowers that other bees were pollinating. I could see the spider's mouth digging into the cocoon. It was munching on the bee for over an hour. Kinda gruesome, but really fascinating. Not sure what kind of spider it was.

Spoiler tags, for those not so fond of spiders.

Spoiler!

i was out on my deck tonight (around 7:30pm). out of no where this huge 'shadow' swoops over head and lands on top of my cedars. it was pitch black so all i could see was this massive shadow. i figured it was the "neighbourhood owl" paying our yard a visit... yup!!!

this was taken from my deck and it was suuuuper dark so the light just came from the camera's flash (and nothing like trying to use manual focus when you can't see your target!)...
