Flames' favourite players growing up
can anyone help fill out this list? I just find it interesting. Here're the ones I know:
Smith and Rittich were Patrick Roy fans
Monahan and Dube were Joe Sakic fans. Monahan's also mentioned Toews and Dube's also mentioned Crosby.
Lindholm was a Peter Forsberg fan
Brodie was a Steve Yzerman fan.
Bennett was a Steven Stamkos fan. He's also mentioned Sidney Crosby.
Tkachuk was a Sidney Crosby fan. He's also mentioned Corey Perry.
Gaudreau and Mangiapane were Martin St. Louis fans. Gaudreau's also mentioned Briere.
Jankowski was a Maxim Afinogenov fan. He's also mentioned Evgeni Malkin.
The ones I can't remember reading about are:
Giordano
Neal
Backlund. He's mentioned wanting to be the next Zetterberg before but I don't think that was a growing up thing.
Frolik
Hanifin
Hamonic
Kylington - I am pretty sure it was Erik Karlsson but I don't have a source?
Andersson
Ryan
Hathaway
Czarnik
Quine
Stone

Iginla's was Wayne Gretzky IIRC.

Monahan said Yzerman in the Rookie Reporter segment this season. Andersson's was Karlsson, from searching up the "Get to Know" videos from the Flames video channel.
Remember when Backlund said he thought Prospal was the best in the NHL after he was drafted?

I'm pretty sure I've heard both Gio and Brodie say they were fans of Lidstrom.

I remember Theo Fleury saying he grew up a fan of Dave Keon, hence the #14.

Brodie was an Yzerman fan? That seems odd. Yzerman was playing 6 years before TJ was born. TJ was only about 4-5 when Yzerman was a superstar scoring over 100 points per season. And if he wanted to cheer for a Red Wing from the 00s, I'd have thought Lidstrom.

Yzerman was the captain of his favourite team as a kid. How is that odd?

Odd is too strong. I just thought it funny because he was really a baby when Yzerman was at the top of his game, before he started to miss 20-30 games a year and changed his game. And also because he's a defenceman (so attracted to Lidstrom's game). Detroit when Brodie was playing early junior hockey would have also had Fedorov, Larionov, Datsyuk, Shanahan, Zetterberg - flashy high points guys who would be attractive for a kid. I just think of Yzerman as a star in the previous era.
Then again, you are right, it's like having Gio as your favorite now, I guess, but if Gio was Eric Karlsson in an earlier part of his career.

There was a five year period not long ago where about half the NHL said Steve Yzerman when asked this question. Not that surprising to see one holdover. He was my favourite player growing up, too, and I'm only a few years older than Brodie.

In 2002 he was 4-for-4 as an 11 year old at the Leafs' skills competition shooting. That was the same year Yzerman won both Olympic gold and the Stanley Cup. I don't see it being odd - Yzerman was one of the most popular NHLers in the world in that era, and the Wings won three cups with him to go with a handful of other great years. Lidstrom's actual popularity didn't really take off until after the lockout by which time Brodie was already in Junior hockey, and probably less impressionable and with less time to watch NHL games.

Were the Leafs players mad that he beat them?

Bad Connie. Ryan Needs to make a choice and stick with it. Monahan choosing Stajan is interesting. Did he have an interaction with Stajan when Stajan was a Leaf?

Ryan - The two red wings were his idols, but missed getting to play them. Playing Crosby and Ovechkin was close enough.
Monahan is from Toronto and that’s his team, seems like Stajan was a big favorite growing up.
They didn’t get much into why Conroy was a big Messier fan, mostly focusing on his first experience playing him,

Oh, I figured Monahan was a Leaf fan. Stajan was kinda middle of the pack on that team, compared to Sundin, so I wondered if young Sean got to meet him or something. Given his community mindedness, it wouldn't have surprised me.
I was just kidding about Ryan.

Believe that Johnny liked Danny Briere growing up since he was a Flyers fan.

I remember some arguing that he said Crosby, but I also thought he said Prospal

Not many players seemed to style their play after their idols.
Was Tkachuk's Tkachuk?
