The Calgary Zoo has entered into a 5 year partnership with Hainan Airlines to fly in 1100kg of bamboo every week for the pandas. Hainan currently serves YYC non-stop to Beijing twice a week.

To save you all some time, a panda eats 20 to 40 lbs of bamboo a day.

To save you all some more time, that's about 80-160 quarter pounders*. Which I'm sure the pandas would enjoy more than a hunk of bamboo.
*yes, I know that's before cooking weight, and only references the meat. But lets not be pandantic, OK?

To save you all some more time, a quarter pounder with cheese is called a royale with cheese in France.

How many pandas did we get?
1100kg a week ÷ (20kg per panda per day × 7 days) = over 9 pandas worth of food?

Fun fact. In Australia it's called a Quarter Panda.

I believe there's four initially because the two that were sent to Toronto had two babies while they were there and they're still with their mother. Eventually, the babies will be sent to China and they hope the adults will breed again while here.
Even then, if the math works out, we're going to be overrun with Chinese bamboo in a few months.

Swoop looks like it has some good deals for summer flights, I just dont get why they don't fly out of Calgary when they're based here

Because if they added in the various fees to actually use YYC, the flight cost wouldn't be all that attractive or visually cheap like all the others (sub-$100 even for the Hamilton to Abbotsford)

They'd take the hit, if required... I reckon. Swoop is flying strategic routes to quell the growth of Flair, the phantom newcomer called Jetlines, etc.
Not necessary out of YYC at the moment.

I understand that WestJet has to do this from a business perspective, but man does it suck they are trying to limit competition in Canada. Where ever Flair is flying these days is driving down the WestJet prices. Flying from Edmonton to Vancouver/Victoria/Hamilton/Winnipeg has never been cheaper.

So as someone who will be in Hawaii when the WJA strike is supposed to happen - what do I do if the flight is cancelled?
Do I have to look for alternative flights, or will WestJet do that for me? Who bears the cost?

Westjet said they will refund any cancelled flights. I'm not sure if you would get a full refund or a partial but I would assume you would need to re-accommodate yourself. If you don't have travel insurance I would think that this would be a good time to purchase some if you can or double check your credit card coverage.
