Not sure why a scout went to bat so hard for this guy. One of the more notable busts in recent memory.

Third round guys are never notable busts
Though I agree the pick always was a confusing one

He was ranked #113 in NA skaters in his draft season. That made him taken what, at least a full round too early?

He came from the same high school they drafted Demetrios Koumontzas from. I don't know what this scout does in terms of travel but it gives you the feeling he is only looking in a few places for players.

If its 113 for NA skaters its probably at least 150 for all skaters. Which is 70 spots after where he was taken.

Edit: looks like he was in the 200's on some rankings.

Sergeev did not play again. UConn shutout by BC 3-0.
BC stars were dominant. Easy to see why Smith, Leonard and Gauthier were top picks

Suniev was kicked out of his game, major and game misconduct for knee on knee hit

Wow, isn't that Suniev's first penalty of the season?

In the same game between UMass and Providence, a Friars player had his wrist slashed by a skate, cutting an artery.

No points for Suniev, as UMass loses 2-1 in OT to Vermont. 13gp/4g/2a/6pts,-3, 15 PIM.

Ethan Haider once again got the start over Sergeev, as UConn wins 2-0 over UMass Lowell. Sergeev is 2-4-0, with a 2.82 GAA, and .897%.

Sergeev did not play again. He hasn't played since Nov 10. Haider gave up 7, but wasn't pulled. I wonder if Sergeev is hurt

Has anyone seen Suniev play this season?

GP 13 G 4 A 2 P 6 for UMass.

This stat line is a little concerning considering the other two members of his amazing line last season: Bradley and Josh Nadeau are tearing it up with 19 points each in 12 games for Maine.

Not trying to be negative or saying the sky is falling but I'm genuinely curious if anyone has any insight into the player this season?

Time to bring Sergeev and Suniev to the wranglers because it seems like they are regressing in College hockey

At the end of the season, I would like to see Suniev at around .5 ppg ideally, but he's a pretty raw prospect- there's no doubt his production last year was bolstered by playing with the Nadeau brothers. No reason for concern though, as he's an 18 year-old playing behind some much older players, I still see him as an exciting prospect.

If he's playing down the lineup as Sandman says, he won't be getting the top six minutes or power play time to pile up points. The Nadeaus get a lot of primo minutes on Maine.

A quick search of the USHL forwards who went to the NCAA program from last year's draft indicates Suniev's development to date isn't unusual (most at 0.33-0.5 PPG). In rounds 2+, only 2-3 players are really doing notably better: Danny Nelson (2nd round), Ryan Conmy (6th round), and arguably Ryan Walsh (6th round - 7 points/11 games).

Based on this, the stat line alone doesn't seem to be a red flag.

Suniev plays 3rd line minutes (no ice time stats, but guessing ~13/14 minutes in the games I've seen), which I think is typical for a good but not elite freshman. He is on 2nd PP unit, but in college that often means the final 15 seconds and a neutral zone faceoff. He is also on the 2nd PK unit, where he plays a fair bit more. The coach seems to trust his line for defensive zone matchups and late game situations.

Unlike watching Coronato the past two seasons, it has not been as much fun watching Suniev or Sergeev this year. I hope the Flames draft an elite college player so I can resume my college hockey obsession.

Suniev is D+1 and getting regular minutes and some points. If these were his stats next year then sure there's more room for worry but he's competing against men up to 4 years older. College is tougher than CHL and he will have lots of time to develop and put up better stats.

Suniev's also pretty well-regarded by college scouts, and I would imagine UMass is doing their best to shelter him and help him adapt. Aside from your occasional Gaudreaus, college players take some time to adapt and adjust to the differences in the game.
