So...anyone had issues with an enlarged prostate??
I'm turning 42 next week and I have been having trouble sleeping the night without having to go pee, it started out as just once a night and now it seems like every other night is twice. Im a shift worker so any disturbance can ruin my whole sleep pattern and it's killing me. I can rule out diabetes as I have recently been tested. After a little research I'm thinking it might be an enlarged prostate. I have booked a Dr's appointment for next week but I would like to hear from anyone whose gone thru the treatment before, as the side effects of Alpha Blockers makes me a little nervous (enlarged breasts, unable to achieve an erection, increased chance of prostate cancer and so on). I would like to have some first hand information before I go thru my options with my Dr.

Alpha Blockers don't have the side effects you listed, 5 alpha reductase inhibitors do.
BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) is relatively common. The cause is pretty simple: the prostate enlarges to the point is restricts urine flow. Prostates grow all your life, but for many men it grows enough to cause a problem. The reason a person goes to the bathroom more is because when they do go, they can never really empty the bladder because of the restriction at the prostate. It then fills up again wiggly and you have to go again.
There are two medication types used: Alpha Blockers (relax smooth muscle capsule which relieves some symptoms) and 5 alpha reductase inhibitors (blocks testosterone from becoming active in prostate tissue which decreases growth).
With newer drugs in both groups that are more specific for receptors found in the prostate, those side effects you listed are really rare. They are very, very well tolerated medications.

There is something uncomfortable about this topic, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

I definitely have an issue with your enlarged prostate. You should see the doc ASAP.

I think it's probably an imaginary problem. Go get tested at the Man Van or at your doctor or whatever and when you find out everything is normal you'll likely stop thinking about it, sleep better and pee less. At least that's what happened to me. My doctor explained it to me like, why would you pee more just at night? People with enlarged prostates pee more all the time they just notice it more at night. (doc's opinion not mine) It is good to get a test now though so you have a baseline for later.

I'm sure if we keep probing with questions, we'll find out what it is.

This article quotes the "Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care" who advise health care professionals against the PSA test. (Not that you should not see a doctor.) Does anyone have feedback on this? They seem to be supported by the government.

1/7 guys get prostate cancer and 1/7 of them die from it, so don't worry. I think that is the message.

Frequent urination could also be a bladder problem. Your GP will determine whether or not you should see a urologist.
