Default Flames Considering Axing 'Forever a Flame'

Thank god.

From 31 Thoughts:

Quote:
I understand there is some discussion inside the organization of adding Al MacInnis’s No. 2 and Joe Nieuwendyk’s No. 25 to Lanny McDonald’s No. 9, Iginla’s No. 12 and Mike Vernon’s No. 30. MacInnis and Nieuwendyk were part of the “Forever A Flame” program, their numbers not officially retired. That could change, and it is a great idea.

Nobody has worn 2 since that ceremony, so MacInnis' number is already effectively retired.

25 ... Frankly, Niewuendyk wasn't here long enough to warrant a retirement, but the Flames are kinda stuck.

There's only one #2 we should be retiring.

In all seriousness, how nobody in the organization realized that "forever a flame" comes off as a slap in the face always confused me.

Who's idea was it? Burke's? Now that he's gone, time to get rid of it?

Newy played as many seasons here as Lanny and Vernon. About a half season less than Kipper.

I don't think Nieuwendyk deserves it since he refused to play for the Flames while he had a validi contract. The Flames were in a time of need, and he abandoned them.

I know we got Iginla out of it, but Nieuwendyk himself had nothing to do with that. The Flames got lucky.

If the team felt the same, he wouldn't have already been honoured.

Joe Nieuwendyk is only 2nd to Iginla in powerplay goals as a Flame. (161 to 130)

His knack for scoring so many game winning goals (3rd) puts him a notch ahead of the rest of the best Flames (Suter, Roberts, Mullen, Nilsson)

Yes, he was only here for 577 regular season games but it's what he did in that time that matters. (4th in points despite being 12th in games played)

Just keep piling on the good news Flames! (are we wearing the retros in the playoffs yet?)

A little disrespectful since it's inception, it's good to see it's on the way out. How are they going to present this I wonder?

If we're going to raise 14, quietly (or not so quietly) converting FAF banners to match 2 and 25 would make sense.

However, I think the next one that should go up is 34. When he spoke to Ryan Leslie on the phone last year it sounded like something was going to be planned this year, but I'm guessing that got bumped by Iggy's ceremony instead.

I hate 'Forever a Flame'...at the same time there needs to be tiers of recognition.

Lanny and Iggy are the only two that deserve to be retired IMO
2, 14, 25, 30 and 34 all deserve some sort of recognition, but cheezy banners isn't it. Neither is a full blown retirement. Just put something in the concourse for the lower tier players.

A franchise with one cup shouldn't have 5-6 retired numbers. The optics are Edmonton levels of embarrassing

They should axe whoever came up with that program while they’re at it.

If you are choosing two why Lanny? He's nowhere near the top in games, points, and he only 6th in goals. He's really not a Flames leader in any career category. He didn't spend the majority of his career here either (and was more productive in Toronto). I know he's been mythologized, but MacInnis would be pretty easily the second leading Flame in my mind (4th in GP, 1st in assists, 3rd in points - and way highest D). Fleury is higher in a lot of categories, but obviously there's issues.
