The Minto Cup has turned into a disaster
Being played this week at Max Bell. At the end of game 1 of the final on Tuesday, Brampton's coach and best player (the coach's son) were both given match penalties - and automatic three game suspensions - for allegedly threatening an official. Brampton appealed prior to game 2, and the suspension for the player was overturned. Consequently, the officials went on wildcat strike and refused to come out for yesterday's game, causing it to be postponed. It is now supposed to be played tonight, but there is no agreement that the referees will show up tonight either. 90 minutes to game time, and nobody has any idea what is happening.
It's become a major embarrassment for the Canadian Lacrosse Association and the sport as a whole

Maybe. Some of the people talking about it on Reddit - who are active players and been officiated by this referee - are noting the official at the centre of this is well known for power tripping. He was apparently chirping the players in that game 1 as well.
Sucks that we'll probably never find out what actually was said, and in what context.

On CTV last night they were saying that there was an agreement that there would be no appeals, and that was part of the reason that the refs were so upset. But what made them ref the game last night was the threat of lawsuits personally if they didn't. I don't know anything about this aside from what was reported, but that's pretty insane if true.

It is pretty sad actually.
This is very good lacrosse, the best junior players in Canada.
It is sad that the only time you hear about this really is this mess.
My boy and I went to an Okotoks v Adanacs game.
Really good fast paced and skilled lacrosse.
I am hoping this pushes to Sunday (game 5), the boy and I will go again.

The CLA needs to eat a giant crapburger for agreeing to a 'no appeals on match penalties' rule in the first place. But, if this was a case where a referee's ego took a team's best player out of the tournament, then they were right to walk back on that promise.
If the referee was right, then they deserve twice the crap.

Well figure out if the guy is qualified to ref in the future...you can't just go taking back the refs calls and making up rules as you go

I would love to hear that side of the mess.

Well, that's going to be one side of the mess, anyway. I suspect the Coquitlam perspective of a BC ref vs. the Ontario team's best player may not be entirely objective.

Recent podcast with the Minto RIC with some interesting comments. His take on things is pretty much as expected.
Such a gong show, I am inclined to side with the refs. At least to the point of not having the CLA throw them completely under the bus. Really think this is going to impact the ability of ALRA to attract refs. Have had a couple of conversations with my one son who refs about the whole thing.
In general, I think the CLA is a crapshow. Between this and the men's national team fiasco and the tax fraud and the board refusing to resign, they are actively working against moving the sport forward.

So apparently the captain and the coach were verbally abusing the officials and threatened to even kill them. The captain and the coach were suspended, but since they were the coach and best player they appealed. The suspension got rescinded only an hour before game 2 and obviosulythe refs had no idea. Saw the coach on the bench and player warming up and were like eff this I'm out.

The coach's suspension was upheld. It was only the player who was allowed to play.
