Submarine Tour to Titanic Missing
News came out earlier this morning that the submarine operated by Oceangate has lost contact with the surface team. It was attempting to dive down to the wreck of the Titanic.
This company operates charter trips to dive the Titanic site for about $250,000 USD per person.
It's a carbon fibre submersible able to dive as deep as 4000 meters. For reference Titanic lies at 3800 meters. It can carry 5 people in total.
Boston Coast Guard is operating the search, and there appear to be 3 ships heading to the site from St. John's to assist.

What is there to gain from exploring the Titanic site so much?

Nothing. Just bored multi-millionaires and billionaires with nothing better to do. Normal things probably don't excite them any more.
From the link, it sounds like these are the likely scenarios:
Quote:
Prof Alistair Greig from University College London is an expert on submarines. He has worked through a number of scenarios for where the missing submersible might be.
One is that it released a “drop weight” after an emergency, in order to bring it to the surface.
“If there was a power failure and or communication failure, this might have happened, and the submersible would then be bobbing about on the surface waiting to be found."
Another scenario, he says, is that the hull was compromised resulting in a leak. “Then the prognosis is not good.”
If it has gone down to the seabed and can’t get back up under its own power, the options - according to Prof Greig - are very limited.
“While the submersible might still be intact, if it is deeper than more than 200m (656ft) there are very few vessels that can get that deep, and certainly not divers.
“The vehicles designed for navy submarine rescue certainly can’t get down to anywhere near the depth of the Titanic.
"And even if they could, I very much doubt that they could attach to the hatch of the tourist submersible.”

Honestly, if I had that type of disposable cash, I would love to see the Titanic remains up close. It's up there with Pompeii and Hindenburg in disasters that I've loved reading about since childhood.

It may become a lot more affordable now, given the apparent risk of disappearing.

Latest update is that it went missing Sunday morning, contact was lost 1 hour and 45 minutes into the dive. RCAF and USAF aircraft are searching the area as well.

How difficult would it be to retrieve the sub once it is located?

What would the deaths look like if there was a breach at depth? Like Total Recall ending or the opposite?

Obviously, it all depends on where it is.
If its at the bottom of the ocean then they're boned. If its bobbing around on the surface of the Atlantic then not long.
