Man, I've been thinking the NHL could make a few bucks selling premium draft streaming packages, like having a cam and mic at the team table so you can hear and watch the draft from the groups perspective.

I've got to think this is how the NHL is planning on making money moving fwd, given the uncertainty and substantial drop in gate revenue.
Get us behind the scenes...I'd pay for that absolutely.

In this day and age where every word of a public figure is scrutinized, I doubt any team will allow that kind of access. Not to mention the secret discussions that are head at the draft table on current and future transactions.

TSN talked about who the Flames should draft. Button says their needs are on D and in goal. They set up a poll based on who they think will be available at 19. The results so far:
Who should the Flames select with the No. 19 pick in the 2020 Draft?
Justin Barron, RD, Halifax (NHL comparable: Matt Niskanen) 37%
Helge Grans, RD, Malmo (NHL comparable: Chris Tanev) 18%
Jeremie Poirier, LD, Saint John (NHL comparable: Nate Schmidt) 20%
William Wallinder, LD, MODO (NHL comparable: Mattias Ekholm) 25%
Of course the guy I like, Helge Grans, is in last spot.

personally i want them to draft a centerman... At least on D you have Andersson, Valimaki and Hanifin and Kylington who are all under 23-24.
not sure who we have at center? Petterson? i haven't seen him play center, so i don't know how good he is at the NHL level (Dube is listed as a LW) and Gadwin seems like more of a 3rd liner.
Especially considering how many good centers there are this draft... calgary could get lucky and have someone slip down to their pick like Zary, Mercer, Jarvis, Brisson, Quinn, Lundell, Bourque and Holloway.
All centers, all in the 10-22 range as ranked by Pronman...

Just take the best player available and trust your scouts.
If that's a center then great.
If Askarov falls and it's a goalie that's the BPA on your list then you do it.
Don't overthink it and never draft for positional need.

I listened to a podcast with Button and he says that they were leaning toward D but with the additions of Mackey and Poolman, they are open to drafting a forward now

Meh... I don't know if I agree with Craig but his connection with brother bear Todd has me worried now.
There's so much D depth in the draft this year, especially 2nd round I would hate to burn our 1st on a D when there will be LOTS of high end talent in the forward group around pick 19.
It would be a HUGE mistake to blow it on any of those 4 D listed IMO as I don't see any huge standout characteristics from those ranked lower in the 50-70 range.
At pick 50 we've got options like:
Jurmo - 6'4 LHS
Rafkin - 5'11 RHS
Heck even Dim Jim's (nephew I think?) Michael Benning could be had.
He's put up impressive numbers in the AJHL and is committed to Denver this year.

^ Agree with Royle.
Based on the current status of prospects in the system, we're definitely going to be drafting some D this year... but I agree there looks to be lots of options with potential in the 2nd & 3rd round (I'd suggest a couple of the guys on that poll will still be there at #49), whereas there's likely to be a handful of good forward options to pick from at 19, and then there's a drop off into later rounds it feels like.
At 19 I'd expect to see at least half of these guys still there, and would be content with any of them. In no particular order:
- Holloway
- Zary
- Bourque
- Lapierre
- Mercer
- Jarvis
- Perreault
- Foerster

I'm hoping the Flames can snag Ozzy Wiesblatt with the 47th pick. I think he's going to surprise people.

If Holloway or Mercer (wishful thinking) are available and they picked D I wouldn't like it. Simply because it takes so long for mid pick D to make the NHL.

Agreed, while I still think the Flames could use a stud offensive Dman you wont find one outside of Drysdale so don't mortgage the pick on a depth D @ 19.

There will be a plethora of good D-men in the second round, I personally would rather draft a forward, but that's what the scouts are for. I pray we can take Joni Jurmo in the second, or trade up and get Poirier (even though the name makes me shudder).

I mean, I can't see how the Flames scouts would BPA that list of D men over so much fw talent in their range. But hey, they've been doing some great work.
But really, its not hard to see that the defensemen pool lies in the later rounds of this draft. Even just casually glancing at the draft lists as a fan.
Should be interesting. Or aggravating.

Porier might still be there in the 2nd. He could drop like a rock. Completely polarizing with elite offensive attributes but massive warts overall.
Total boom/bust pick - but wouldn't be surprised to see him drop to mid or even late 2nd.

Respect your opinion very much, but on this I disagree. His problem is his lack of defensive play, which affects many young D-men, especially in the Q-he'll learn as he develops. His skating backwards and forwards is great, he has an awesome shot, and his IQ is top-notch. I would say he's gone before the 10th pick of the second round, maximum.
