Peters also criticized Dube and Kylington. Said Dube isn't doing enough of the things that he needs to be an everyday NHLer and Kylington needs to be more consistent.

I agree that Kylington needs to be more consistent - that is true of most young Dmen.

But IMO, Dube has been probably the single best forward in the games so far. Obviously practice matter too, and we don't get to see that. But none the less...

Peters did this last year, without being asked brought up #29 and questioned if he was NHL ready. Dube scored next game and got two more assists and was sent down, right when things were on the upturn.

I'm not saying the A wasn't good for him, but it seems Peters isn't as impressed as much as we or most of the commentators I've heard are

I didn't think Dube had a very good game in Edmonton.

Dube and Kylington comments start at 1:07. The way he shakes his head as the question is asked makes me think Dube is not close to making the opening day roster unless he changes Peters' mind soon.

Yeah his Edmonton game was rough. How much of that was the DSP anchor is unknown, but his game and the underlying stats were poor.

Dube was a beast all preseason, start to finish, in clearly winning his spot on the roster.

This year, he had a strong first game or two, but didn't do much last game.

Hoping he turns it up this week.

I think that this is Peters coaching through the media. The spot is theirs if they take it, its good to let them know that their job isn't safe.

How is he coaching through the media? In the interview he told them this was what was said directly to the player. If he is asked the question he answers it.

There's a big difference between saying it privately to the player, and saying it privately to the player AND publicly for the world to hear.

However, I kind of agree with you. I really don't see how this helps the situation other than to prep fans for a Dube cut. Enhance motivation through public scrutiny, maybe?

100% this IMO

He then went on to praise Rieder, who at best has played just behind Dube.

To me, things have been decided. Dube can be moved at will and Rieder will come in cheap. At least thats how the season will start.

I loved Dube in that split squad game .. unfortunately it wasn't a fully sanctioned preseason game and therefore has no stats.

Since then he has played the Sharks and Oilers.

Vs San Jose
50% CF%
52.6% xGF%
41.7% SCF%
50% HDCF%

Vs Edmonton
15.8% CF%
28.7% xGF%
16.7% SCF%
25% HDCF%

Peters may be on to something.

Through two games he's fourth worst in CF, 9th worst in xGF%

Rieder is 5th and 9th best in those categories.

Seems to me he is challenging those two players rather than criticizing them

The head coach has countless private conversations with players and doesn't divulge the content of those conversations even if directly asked. When he does, it is for a reason.

As Pindar said, would Peters make those comments about vets?

I think the problem with that is that wins are MUCH harder to come by at the end of the season...get off to a good start and you have a bit of a cushion.

Although, that didn't work out so well last year.

Did he say that by way of explaining the difference between how a coach treats veterans and young players, or did he say that as if it was a complete mystery?
