Backlund missing from practice today:
Derek Wills @Fan960Wills
#Flames practicing @WinSportCanada. Mikael Backlund appears to be only healthy, under contract player missing.

Mikael Backlund is absent from practice this afternoon. Without him, top six forward group looks like this:
Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Mangiapane-Bennett-Frolik
Jankowski also absent today. #Flames

Backlund sick today. Jankowski blocked a shot last night, so ankle was too sore to practice today. #Flames

Yeah, I thought so too earlier when his first interview popped up. His on-ice play has looked good enough to warrant a contract, but I can see his locker room presence being a big plus too.
I can't believe I'm becoming a Zac Rinaldo fan... I feel so unclean.

well, moreso the line. Throw Backlund Tkachuk and Dube/Jankowski/Ryan/IDC in as another line

Honest question AC, I don't pay enough attention to other team's players, what has Rinaldo done? Thanks in advance.

So sure balls to wall on the ice, but also be a good interview, being honest and frank and well spoken, and well available, and you'll get the media folks on your side and a lot of face time to win some fans over, fwiw.

With Calgary at 42 contracts they should offer all the PTOs left two way deals. No harm in adding free depth.

No need to limit ourselves to our PTO’s. How about swooping in on other teams PTO’s that have performed well too?

Agreed. I don't care about his work ethic or attitude. Too dirty. I don't want that guy in a Flames jersey.

I just haven’t seen enough to think he will make/help the team.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

I don't normally bother to read hockeybuzz but as the title matched what I saw, I clicked: On Smith-Pelly, Gillies' struggles, and Bennett's chance generationhttps://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?blogger_id=202.
I'm not a stats guy but DSP's line seemed to be hemmed in every shift and this confirms it. I wonder if it is worth releasing him early as I can't see him making the NHL even as a backup forward. Zac easily beats him. Even at 42 slots, I have to think that there are better PTOs out there.
