i love ridng my fat bike in winter, but the extra work to get dressed can be a real pain, and causes me to really have to force myself to get out especially in the evening after work - weekend are a little easier
Throw in calgary's ever changing climate where figuring out the right mix of clothing is a chore and then there is the how much ice is on the pathways issue.
These factors can make it a chore just to get to the point of throwing a leg over the saddle - but once I am at that point, it is easy.

Monday I took side streets. It was not good. So yesterday I took 10th. It was good. But I really dislike it after a snowfall, to many variables involving speeding vehicles. So back to the sidestreets today. Still not good. Hopefully we get a full melt today, as it is dropping below zero tonight, and I'd like to take 10th again tomorrow.

Just posting this as a follow up since we discussed the incident when it happened. The cyclist was convicted and apparently the penalty was the maximum allowed under the law for the offence they were convicted of (going by the radio report only on that one).

Conditions are going to be real interesting come Saturday, Sunday and into next week. Some areas have these giant melt puddles, which will then freeze and end up covered in 10-15cm of snow. Then things will start melting all over again later next week. I have no idea what to expect on the pathways. "Hang on to your butts"

I'm thinking usually when we get that much snow it covers up the ice pretty well for a bit, so it shouldn't be to bad immediately after. Then just more fuel for the melt-water later...
I skipped Confed Park this morning, and found a side street route over to 10th st. There was just so much water last night no ym ride home I figured I'd be walking most of it today.

The one puddle that prompted by post was the one we are calling 'Lake Bridgeland'. It's just west of the LRT pedestrian overpass and it must be a foot deep and stretches about 50m along the pathway and spills out over the sides of it quite a ways. It's a beast.

The ped path is your best bet for sure. I'm making an effort to ride it slowly and give people walking/jogging lots of space while I'm using it.

I used to commute through there to downtown a couple of years ago and this place is always a problem for this. Not as big but there is a little pond by the electrical station on nose creek that I've been debating bringing a shovel/scraper to try to empty when it gets warmer.

Also the puddle that has formed just under 16th avenue on the Nose Creek pathway has become a beast. The one on the north end. It was actually completely frozen over this morning, but was creaking something fierce as I rode over it.

I've loved riding in the last couple of weeks. other then the wind. the wind can die. I would rather never have another tailwind again if I could never get a headwind. even the side wind sucks.

Are you reporting on 311? I've had moderate success reporting the major puddles and getting it cleared.
