As wild as their series opener was, neither the Calgary Flames nor Edmonton Oilers are expecting anything close to a repeat when they resume their Western Conference second-round clash Friday in Calgary.
The 9-6 Flames victory -- which not only set a record for the fastest two goals by one team to start a Stanley Cup playoff game, but was the highest-scoring affair in Battle of Alberta in history -- was light-years from the game plans drawn up by either squad.
"You can't take back what's happened in the past," said Oilers goaltender Mike Smith, who is scheduled to start the game despite being pulled after surrendering three goals in the first 6:05 of Wednesday's game. "I could sit here and boo-hoo myself, but there's nothing I can do about it now. All you can think about is what's going to happen next ... and be ready."
Five takeaways from the Calgary Flames’ Game 1 win over the Edmonton Oilers
The puck possession in Game 1 wasn’t as one-sided as it was in chunks of the Dallas series, but the Flames led in basically every shot metric at five-on-five (via Natural Stat Trick): 63.8% in Corsi, 64.0% in Fenwick, 63.6% in shots, 68.9% in scoring chances, 68.4% in high-danger chances and 66.7% in expected goals. They did not play a perfect game (see below), but they had the puck a lot. If they can be a bit more responsible with it, Edmonton may have a tough next few games.
Flames, Oilers want to continue goal outburst, limit each other more in Game 2
After a stunning bonanza of goals in their series opener, the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers are plotting how to limit each other's output in Friday's second game.
Easier said than done with each side boasting the most prolific scorers in the NHL.

Even if Tanev does play, I'd like to see Stone in the lineup as well. Stone may not be a pugilist but he is big, strong and is needed in those scrums.
