Default Is it time to call up Mathew Phillips?

With a compressed schedule on the horizon and a clear need of a shot in the arm for the middle six is it time for the Calgary Flames to call up Mathew Phillips?? I’d say having read numerous stories and interviews recently from the HC of the Heat as well as those here who have a deeper pulse on the Heat (I’m looking at you Scorp) I can’t help but think the big club would benefit from calling up a seemingly determined yet diminutive Calgary born forward who also is seemingly unfazed by any doubts that he can’t be an impact player at the pro level.

With Phillips breaking the point a game barrier at the AHL level and before the age of 25 I can’t help but think the flames have found another diamond in the rough and having followed him closely ever since drafting him I continue to cheer for the guy.

Now when seriously talking about should we call him up at this point with the likes of Ritchie, Richardson, Lewis, Pitlick and the like I just can’t see how calling up Phillips who’s well seasoned in the AHL is a bad idea. Play him with some size in Monahan and Lucic and see what we have in him already. He’s more than earned it.

Pitlick and Ritchie have a grand total of 2 points (0 goals, 2 assists) in 40 games. Markstrom and Vladar both have more points than Ritchie this season.

This may be crazy, but I believe Phillips may be able to offer more offensively.

I don't feel like losing Dube to waivers while Ritchie, Pitlick, Lewis and Richardson are on the team.

The question is who to bump out of the top 9?

Backlund and Coleman aren't delivering 2nd line production, though they have been an effective shut down line. Mangiapane kinda feels wasted there, and he's got more points in less than half the time playing with Dubé and Ritchie.

Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk
2O. Mangi-Monahan-Phillips
2D. Lucic-Backlund-Coleman
4. Lewis-Dube-Ritchie

Deploy the Mangi line as sheltered as possible like the Huberdeau line in FLA.

I have basically zero faith he can be an NHLer. Too small.

But I hope to hell I’m wrong.

The only reason that this doesn't work at the moment is because the only logical player to bump down to the fourth line is Lucic, and he has proven very useful on the third line.

Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Coleman - Monahan - Mangiapane
Dube - Backlund - Phillips
Lucic - Richardson - Lewis/Ritchie

I think that Phillips is regulated to an injury call-up.

I think it would be great to put him on the taxi squad. Let him practice with the team and see how his skill looks or pushes people...maybe.
May be better to call up Gawdin or Pelletier if it's for a game.

No such thing anymore, he's about the same size as Debrincat

They certainly need someone other than the first line and an occasional goal from Lucic

I'm all for giving players ice time and an opportunity to prove they bel9ng in the NHL. That being said I do. Not believe Phillips will ever be a regular NHLer.

Just not enough production from roughly 3-4 guys in the bottom 9.

They don't have to be a PPG or even half that, but 8-10 points at this juncture would be very helpful to the team. Meaning a guy like Tyler Pitlick who is tabbed as a 'middle 6' player, and Richardson who outside of a goal in Pitts has been a ghost out there.

And Backlund should have twice the amount of points he has at this juncture given his track record of production.

As the 2C we need him tracking for at least 40 points

Why would anybody expect anything from Ritchie, Richardson, Lewis and Pitlick? They are plugs/PTO type.

The problem is they need to be replaced. Treliving is not doing his job
