Violator, you have my most sincere apology. I didn't realize you'd previously embarrassed yourself in front your girlfriend's super techy Dad with a Playbook. It must have been horrible to be shown up with an iPad 2 like that.
Give me a call and if you're up for it, we can go to Best Buy. I'll hold your hand and explain the pros and cons of every tablet and e-reader they've got available, so that you don't have to waste any further time with the useless members of the Tech Talk forum who've taken time out of their day to try and help you. They just don't "get" you.
Or, better yet, you could find your answer here.

Not to distract from the point of your question but what kind of 'super techy' person is not able to connect a Playbook to the wifi?
Back on point, you have actually answered your own question. There are a couple good ebook readers for the Playbook that will tide her over until you can afford an iPad. Probably even more now that the Android apps are being ported over in larger numbers.

I'm sure not many people care but Blackberry just released a software update for the playbook, I am downloading it now and it is 352 MB so I am intrigued to see what they have done.

I have my playbook associated with a half-dozen or more WI-Fi networks, and other than the learning curve of the first one, have found it one of the easier devices to join to a network, and the wi-fi file sharing works like a dream...

Not sure where to put this and figured a new thread was a bit much. Very interesting behind the scenes story on theverge if you're into that sort of thing. How quickly things can change:

Pre to postmortem: the inside story of the death of Palm and webOS
Thirty-one.
That’s the number of months it took Palm, Inc. to go from the darling of International CES 2009 to a mere shadow of itself, a nearly anonymous division inside the HP machine without a hardware program and without the confidence of its owners. Thirty-one months is just barely longer than a typical American mobile phone contract.

So I finally joined the tablet world and picked up the Asus TF300.
So far pretty awesome, really snappy.
Over the next little while may main use for it will be Media and PDF viewing.
Just wondering if anybody has suggestions for best PDF viewer for android? The interwebz says ezpdf but I find it a bit clunky.
Also wondering what some of the better remote media streaming apps are? So i can stream stuff from my home PC to whatever hotel I may be staying in. I have been out of the remote tech game for awhile, so I don't know if it has advanced any further than being just a novelty. Or if it is actually usable. I would imagine it is probably 95 percent Internet speed dependent

There was a firmware release for the Transformer Prime this week.
I haven't run it too long but it is supposed to allow better wifi, bluetooth and give better battery life.

Monday Microsoft is making a now secret announcement which is believed to be a Microsoft tablet. It would be the first computer (or close enough to a computer) produced by the company and will run Windows 8.

If people are still looking for a playbook, I hear they are cheap this week at Walmart. Just over $100 for 32 gigs I think?

I have a playbook, and it is pretty decent. Definitely have enjoyed it since I got it. For 100, that's ridiculous.

We're only on the new iPad right now. The newest iPad is the generation after the newer iPad.

What's a good tablet to do lots of writing on? Preferably not iPad-priced. =P

Yeah for $100, can't go wrong. I've had it twice, returned/sold twice, as couldn't justify the price ($499 FTW). Basically only good for a media player and internet tablet, and mildly useful bridged to my work BB, as the apps range from mediocre to poor, but the 7" form factor like the Nexus 7 has shown, is fantastic for pick up and go.
At that price its tempting for round #3. If there was only a decent GPS app, would be good to get a car mount.

Galaxy Note 10.1 which looks to be about 499.99 at BB.
Walcom pen and digitizer with 1024 levels of pressure to make it the ideal pen input tablet. Crazy stable and fast too.
Other than that, a good stylus like the Jot and probably the iPad.
