And it was an extremely short sighted decision. First of all, Brian Elliott had one season left on his contract. Secondly, the Flames were rebuilding to an extent, so giving up the 35th pick in a deep draft for 1 year of Elliott is straight foolishness. Thirdly, Brian Elliott sucks. His catching glove has a giant hole in it and the only reason why he was any good was because of the Blue’s stifling defensive play. Very poor pro scouting from his team. It honestly would’ve been more prudent to bring back an injured Karri Ramo to compete with Chad Johnson. I actually think I hate the Elliott trade almost as much as I do the Hamonic trade.

FWIW, the Flame's advance analytics on Elliot were quite good.

Probably because he was in the 20s on a lot of lists.

Maybe analytics don’t tell the whole story then. If Treliving’s advanced analytics are part of the reason why he fell in love with Hamonic and signed the Neal’s and Brouwer’s of the world then count me out on analytics. I’d rather have the guy who has the elite eye for talent and the vision to build a contender. I think any random could’ve taken the once promising young 2014 core to a bubble playoff team of today. What the Flames needed was for Treliving to help elevate them past that and he didn’t.
The cupboards are also bare relative to rest of the league and that’s another big problem. The other teams ranked next to us have won Cups or have have a finals appearance or have won a lot of playoff rounds. We’re in a bad spot everywhere up and down.

John Vogl who’s a Sabres beat writer and I think part of the Athletic wrote the Flames offer would have to include Tkachuk, Zary and a 1st and wrote that both Eichel and Reinhart could be a good fit.
Not sure how people feel about that, I think I’d give that up.

Have to make the cap work though. I wouldn't mind Reinhart but that's over $15m in cap space
Tkachuk, Hanifin, Backlund and a 1st
for
Eichel and Reinhart

I was surprised to read in the comments how many Sabres fans were OK with the Tkachuk proposal.. I'd do that deal all day everyday

I'd do that. I'd also be dangling a draft pick or a prospect not named Zary, Pelletier, Kuznetsov, Poirier, or Wolf to Seattle for them to take Lucic. Complete reset on our salary structure and all of the worst salaries gone.

I would do it, I even add Monahan instead of Zary for salary purpose if they want.

While it'd be nice for the Flames cap situation for Seattle to take Looch, after he waived his clause so that the Flames could protect someone else for the betterment of the team... It would be a massive dick move to convince Seattle to take him

Monahan, Tkachuk, 1st for Eichel and Reinhart is interesting. Not sure who says no.
Though I find it hard to envision none of Monahan, Tkachuk or Gaudreau on the team in 2yrs, think one sticks (and it's least likely Johnny of the 3)

What happens if he's the perfect Vet to protect the young franchise? Nobody can say he didn't play his role this year in Calgary be it a bit pricey! Always gotta hit the cap floor.

It helps that Philly also had a disappointing season. Can still see a deal involving Konecny and Gaudreau.

I mean sure if Seattle decides to just take him then whatever. But I think it'd look bad for the Flames to actively convince them to

Agreed…Lucic thing just has to play out naturally
Don’t want to be blacklist by all FAs or trades, not that we are not already
Besides while I don’t love Lucic hockey, I absolutely love him as a player. If that makes any sense
