Good job NHL. Maybe he'll start to get the message through his thick skull soon. He's going to forfeit almost 1.3 million bucks because of this.

I wonder if hockey will start looking at hits like the NFL does.
The fact of the matter is, Wilson could have completed his check without knocking the player to kingdom come. In football, you can no longer tackle the QB by putting all of your weight on him as you fall on him. In theory, you can put as much into the tackle as you need to, but cannot simply crush him because you have.
Wilson didn't need to hit him like he did regardless of the head shot.
With concussions playing a part in a players long term health and career etc., the league is clearly trying to get needless hits like this out of hockey.
That's good on them.

apparently his contract is 6.1M this year (5.2M AAV).
5million was paid on the 1st of July as a signing bonus.
so 1.1million is his salary for the rest of the year.
He's forfeiting 1.26M (24% of his AAV).
So it's sort of like working for the year and paying the company money for the right to do so.

that's the important part I think. his recent body of work in being a cheap shot artist.

Dear god no. The NFL has gotten ridiculous with that QB rule. That is NOT the example to follow.

I don't think there is anything in the CBA that forbids it.
The CBA allows the Commissioner and arbitrator to consider evidence that was not available at the time of the initial ruling. So if there is some new compelling evidence as to why it should be longer they could present it, but I doubt it happens.

Good suspension, we'll see if he does it again. If he hits someone like that again in 2018-2019 it should be the rest of the year + playoffs.

maybe it would have been only 10 but the league figured some would get knocked off on appeal, so they accounted for it.

For a guy that said he's been talking to Player Safety over the summer to make sure he plays the right way, it didn't seem to stick.
This should stick a little more.

That's more $$ than his entire salary last season. Good.

If losing a million dollars doesn't fix him, nothing will.
Next suspension should be a season.

The only issue I have here is that it's not clear to me how much is for the act itself, and how much is for being a repeat offender. If this was a first time offender, I can't tell what the DOPS is saying the suspension would be. Anyway I'm sure there will be an appeal, because... whoof.

Are we sure that's how it works?
I assume that he simply isn't paid during his suspension. That would be based on his salary this year, would it not, and wouldn't include the signing bonus already paid?

Well if I got a 5M bonus in July working for free wouldn't be so bad

The DOPS video has a bunch of slow motion, zoomed in angles and Sundqvist is looking at the net, which makes sense since he was taking a shot. His head was up and Wilson targeted it.
