Is Valamaki not exempt from the expansion draft? I thought first and second year professional players were exempt?

Nah, Treliving has a plan...I'm sure of it. I'd be surprised if he didn't have it all mapped out already to minimize damage. I mean look what he did with Hanifin and Lindholm to get cost certainty, as well as improving the team in the process.
I'm not so sure a new team wants Gio because of the combination of age and salary, but you could make a minor deal to ensure it.
For an Expansion team looking for that kind of leadership? You either protect him or pay a pretty penny to have them not take him. honestly I expected a drop off by now in Gio's game. Dudes as stable as they come. If Seattle could get him for two three years to set the bar for players in the organization, they'd take him.

Depends on their game plan. I love Gio - look at my name. But I would bet that he isn't who they would plan around. If they spend, it's going to be on a goalie and maybe a name forward.
I'm not saying don't protect him. I'm saying the bargain might be better than people imagine. But you have to be careful and not do a Florida deal.
If there is a lockout, the NHL should adjust the expansion rules accordingly... I would hope.

Instead of making just 1st and 2nd year pros protected, they could change the rule to 1st, 2nd and 3rd year pros if there is a lockout and the expansion draft ins't until 2021.
Every expansion draft has had slightly different rules. Unless they already promised Seattle that the rules weren't subject to change, couldn't the NHL make them whatever they want?

They'd be part of the expansion deal, though. They can't set the rules arbitrarily, it would be part of whatever deal Seattle agrees to.

Right, and the NHL noted that expansion would be in 2020 with the same rules as the Vegas expansion. If the year happens to change because of a lockout, then why couldn't the rules change?
I also don't see why they still couldn't have the expansion draft in 2020 right after the playoffs regardless.
