Just finished this as well. I thought Winona Ryder was terrific in her role. Loved the music, the 80's references, just really entertaining. My son got a kick out of all the 80's props that I had at one point. My friend used to own that exact Ford Pinto only in red!
I said I'd be excited either way they went, but I have to admit, I'm really happy that all indications are it will be a continuation of the first season's story.

The Upside Down has slowly creeped it's way into the world while the government has been covering it up.
But I'm just happy we're getting a second season of it in general.
Just started watching, as I had to start something else now that Dr Who is removed from Netflix. 23 minutes in, noticed a modern Periodic table in the wall in the teachers classroom. Anyways, I'm continuing watching!
There were some hints that the monster is an alien in the classic sense - from another planet or star system. The scientists talked about making "contact". Also, one of the final scenes was a long shot of a very starry sky.
More likely, the monster is a being from another plane of existence, not another star. D&D mythology is full of alternate planes and dimensions - like the Shadow Plane. The monster does not seem intelligent or capable of space travel. How can it move between worlds? Why was there only one?

I think the question is why the upside down seems to mirror our world geographically; there are more hints (but still no answers) in the dimension than in the monster itself. Is this an alternate dimension that at some point diverged from ours? Is it a 'future' version of ours? Is it a different dimension that ours has somehow infected? Maybe even an artificially-created dimension? Also, what did the monster eat before it got access to our dimension, because that other dimension looks pretty barren for such a voracious carnivore.

the impression i got was that the monster itself was created when the government and the soviets started tampering with the psychic plane. I didn't get the feeling that the upside down was a place of any importance but rather a means for the monster to escape and elude capture. hence why it would be so barren and why the monster only eats things in our plane.

I think this makes the most sense. A loose metaphor might be the loading screen in the matrix.
