TBF, Sutter says checking is not defensive play.

Gaudreau was most improved defensively...certainly not the best IMO
I think he might struggle with that side this season, especially given his linemates

Nah, I see what he's trying to say on this point. He differentiates checking (i.e. harassing the puck carrier up and down the ice) from defending (defensive zone positional play).
I mean they both contribute to lower goals against, but that's just his terminology to keep in mind when he talks about Gaudreau being the best checker.

Yeah, Johnny's a great pickpocket, and he's adept at breaking up passes and interrupting plays,etc....

GOAT!

I literally said three things: - If he was bigger and heavier, he'd be Datsyuk 2.0.
- He's very, very good defensively for his size.
- Because of his size he's forced to use his speed and stick instead of his body.
Things I literally did not say: - He's Datsyuk 2.0.
- He's very, very good defensively. Period.
- His size should be ignored when discussing his defensive capabilities, and should therefore be compared to players like Barkov and Bergeron (who do not suffer the drawback of being 4-6 inches shorter and 40-60 lbs lighter than they people they play against).
Edit: To clarify further... I think of Datsyuk and Gaudreau as being equal in terms of skill, creativity, vision and defensive stickwork. Datsyuk, while certainly not a giant, was at least big enough to not be the physical equivalent of a mosquito. I believe that Johnny has the same hockey brain as Datsyuk and would be a generational talent and the best player in the NHL right now, if he was a few inches taller and at least 20lbs heavier.

Gotcha, Goodrow is good at putting up fences but sometimes they’re too short.

I think he envisioned himself on the beach year round with a fat contract. Mission accomplished.

Playing Tkachuk and Bennett together always seemed like a super obvious decision, yet it pretty much never happened. Always baffled me too. But I look forward to them turning on their coach 1/4 way into the season.

Instead of Lindholm he gets Bennett, instead of Gaudreau he gets Balcers. Just a slight downgrade -- no Barkov for you.

Because Tkachuk isn't a third liner, and Bennett could never overtake Monahan and Backlund.
I guess we'll see how Bennett's game has rounded out, Tkachuk has always benefitted from strong two-way centres in the past.

He would be lucky to get 70 pts with Bennett
Bennett would be lucky to get 50

After seeing this i just flipped Bennett to get Weegar in my keeper league. I feel satisfied with myself.

Backlund's line should have been the third line all along- as we all were saying and are now seeing. We never gave Bennett enough offensive rope to prove he could be part of a second line, which he has evidently proven since in Florida.
Putting him with a well producing Tkachuk in year 3 of Tkachuk's time here could have provided a much needed offensive spark to both. Tkachuk-Bennett-Mangiapane would have been interesting to watch.
Anyways, I think Bennett is a poor attitude player who struggled with effort and mentality during his later years here. I don't think he was ever going to turn out, and am still not sure he will remain a productive top 6 player. My personal guess is around 40 points this year. But to say he wasn't able to displace monahan or backlund is just malarkey, he was never given even close to a chance to do that.

That Panthers team lost so much talent. Huberdeau, Weegar, Giroux, Marchment, Chiarot, Vatrano all gone. Duclair out injured
Verhaeghe-Barkov-Reinhart
Tkachuk-Bennett-Balcers
Luostarinen-Lundell-White
Lomberg-Cousins-Hornqvist
Forsling-Ekblad
Staal-Montour
Mahura-Gudas
That team really lacks depth IMO.

Marc Staal on the 2nd pairing is hilarious. I still think they miss the playoffs.

Except Huberdeau was the playmaker on that line not the others
