Default HELP! - Plant is Falling Apart

CP'ers, need your smarts and ingenuity urgently!

Our plant has grown huge and is falling apart. As can be seen from the photo, its trunks are long and weak, while the leaves are large and heavy. We've tried reinforcing it with bamboo u-shape sticks pushed into the soil and ropes but it keeps falling apart. Larger pot is no longer an option; the one it grows in is as big as they get. Any helpful suggestions or, even better, a sketch would be much appreciated!

I would say it is time to cut it down and start with a new plant. That looks like a dieffenbachia to me. There is great info at the link below.

https://www.instructables.com/id/Sho...bachia-Amoena/

Personally, this is my method for plants like dieffenbachias, rubber plants, and peace lilies. I dump the whole plant out on a big piece of plastic on the floor and then choose 3 of the best plants or sections. I cut off the tops so about 25 to 30 cm stem is left at the bottom. I have good success by just putting the plants back in new soil but sometimes I root the sections in a pail of water first, until roots grow, and then plant in soil. I start with a pot that looks like it is a bit big for the plant. That way, it has enough room in the pot to grow without transplanting all the time or dividing and starting over all the time.

Yeah, it's a dieffenbachia, also known as Dumb Cane. I just found and was reading the same link you've quoted. Looks like it might be too late to save ours as is and all we can do now is just cut off the trunks and let them re-grow leaves. Makes me sad; it's been with us for over 15 years...

I'm not a plant guy, but does that kind of plant naturally want to be a 'vine' style plant? Maybe just alter the way that you present it, and let it be the plant that it wants to be.

Cut the canes, and the boys with leaves. Dip in rooting hormone and replant. Will be fine

Oh, huh. I usually keep the leafy tops, and dip that section in hormone, then replant. If I need more I cut 2-3" sections of stalk, hormone them and plant. That way you still get a nice looking plant in between.

They are kind of un-killable.

If you're doing another haircut soon, I am interested in rooting a new plant.

I love this thread.

Your care and compassion for this plant is heartwarming.
