Getting into the second tier prospects for me. Not write-offs but I would say the next 5 or 6 guys are long-shots with high potential. Went Philips this round. I think if any of these guys are going to make it, it's him.

Phillips. Kid has amazing junior game, but let's see if he can do it in the pros. He has the skills and the drive to make it if he works on some things.

As for the rest of the prospects, we are definitely at a cliff with a 100 foot drop to the next tier.

I have the next 5 as:

Klimchuk
Shinkaruk
Ruzicka
Svenningson
Tuulola

Went with Lindstrom. He's been playing with men for the past two seasons, represented Sweden at the World Jrs., and reports say he's strong defensively.

Klimchuk. He should have been in the NHL last year ahead of a few overpriced vets. Hopefully he leaves the team no choice in training camp.

Phillips perhaps has the upside but as yet he has shown little at the pro level. Again I was disappointed by him at the development camp. Hopefully he takes the leap and is off to the races.

Gottta go with Phillips.

He plays a surprisingly gritty and direct to the net kind of game. He reminds me a bit of Paul Byron. Points wise, he's been better every year. Heck, the last 4 years he's been above a PPG every year. Even in his one game in the AHL last year he had a point.

I am really curious to see how he does with a full season in the AHL. With the game shifting every year to being faster and more skilled, I'm glad we have guys like him around instead of more Riley Bruce type picks. He is still a longshot, but he's a longshot that I can get excited about.

Klimchuk. Phillips is just a WHL wonder boy, need to see if his game translates to a higher level league.

My next two are Phillips and Gawdin.

I get the Klimchuk love but if we're looking at pure unrealized talent and highest ceiling at this point in the game its Phillips.

Basically at this point I will be voting strategically in close polls in an attempt to help force some runoffs. My vote is for sale.

Morgan Klimchuk. Projects to be an excellent penalty-killer and you need players like that too.

Frankly, Phillips is long-shot. The European pro leagues are filled with guys like him.

Let's see how he fares in the AHL first.

At this point it becomes a bit of a crapshoot.
Going for Ruzicka here though. He has NHL size, good jump in offence in his draft +1 year, only his 2nd year in North America. See him topping out as a middle 6 big bodied winger, net front on 2nd PP, if he keeps developing. But like everyone at this stage, he is a wildcard.
Phillips has higher upside, but is a real risk to never play in the NHL
Klimchuk has upside as Frolik, more likely a bottom 6 guy who flits between NHL and AHL
Shinkaruk is a bust IMO
Lindstrom, Svenningson, Pettersen, Joly - all have a shot, but very hard to tell how realistic a shot at this point.

Since Ruzicka won't win this, or likely the following round, at least I have someone to keep voting for...

Definitely in a lower tier now...

So one of... D'Artagnan Joly (A+ name), Phillips, Tuulola, and Klimchuk. I guess Phillips.

Have gone Phillips for last 3 rounds. Interesting that is between two local Calgary products at this point, he and Klimchuk with Shinkaruk also in the mix to an extent

I get that Phillips may be off to Europe for a long career, but its the 9th round , would expect that for most prospects. His upside (admittedly not knowing much about the recent draftees would appear to be the highest)

his age, size and stats aren't that different from the 'great' Kailer Yamamoto so 9th seems reasonable for him

We're about at the point in this thing where I have no real opinion (other than goalies suck, of course), so from here on out I'm easily persuaded by a good post. Congrats Philips backers, you've won me over for this round!

Good article from the Nation site a year ago ...
https://flamesnation.ca/2017/03/22/p...thew-phillips/

pointing to his primary points / total points being off the charts in his 18 year season.

His P1/GP was ahead of Barzal and he was doing it a year younger. He and Yakamoto were essentially tied with Phillips being just under a half a year older.

This past season Phillips was right there again sitting 8th in the league in P1/GP, and ahead of both Yamamoto and Dube with three guys ahead of him all being overagers including Gawdin.

His production at the WHL level is elite, but he just hasn't shown it to the same level at Flames camp.

I think if Phillips is going to make it as a pro, it's going to be as a power play specialist which given how important special teams are now, is a good thing for him.

I don't see the skating, quickness and agility in him that you see in other small players who have made it in the NHL.

I'm excited to see how he adjusts in the AHL.

In this round, I went with the safer pick to play in Klimchuk. It's a make or break season for him. He needs to at least put up a point per game in the AHL this season or I think the Flames will cut him loose.

This is where these polls become interesting. I believe that there is at least one NHLer left on the board. It will be interesting to see who CP thinks that will be.

My choice is Adam Ruzicka. He is 6'4" 203 pounds at 19. He was just about a point per game player in his OHL career. The one draw back I read in his scouting reports is consistency. That is something that he can work on. A year in the AHL will do wonders for his game.
