Bartkowski on D and Hamilton on the front end. Those are the only vets who finished the season in Calgary who I can see potentially going through waivers.

Gaudreau - Mono - Ferly
Tkachuk - Bennett - Versteeg
Frolik - Backs - Lazar
Stajan - Janko - Brouwer

Versteeg/Tkachuk and Lazar/Frolik can switch wings I believe.

agree, I'm not sure Gaudreau and Monny can keep up to Tkachuk's scrums

Bartkowski is going to need to fight for his job that's for sure.

Hamilton I think is a little safer because you want a 13th/14th forward up front who won't cause a fuss if he's scratched and isn't a young developing forward who would be hurt by consistent scratches. Hamilton seems like such a great fit as an extra forward because you can easily scratch him, he's versatile (C/RW) and he seems to be solid enough when called upon.

I really, really, really hope that Bennett gets some better linemates this year. Get some confidence and identity going for the young man.

i'd like to see Brouwer have to earn his spot on the roster through on ice production.

Probably the most important factor for me.

Too much inexperience together, but I would still like to see

Bennett - Janko - Foo

Maybe a split squad or something near the start.

If Rasmus was a lefty he would have a good shot but the right side is stacked and therefore i see him getting huge minutes in stockton and the first callup, especially if theres an injury on the right side. No rush with this kid.

I want to see Janko make the big team. Also hoping Bennett gets better linemates. Success in goal would be nice also.

Edit: I guess that's kind of my hopes for the season as opposed to preseason hahah! Preseason, as others have said would like to see more preparation for the actual season.

So with Janko...we have too many centers.

Some forecast Janko on the wing with Backs / Frolik. I like that....but if ever there were a natural center it's Jankowski.

Some lineups have Stajan moving to wing. I like this too...in fact I was pedicting it last year already. If I'm not mistaken Stajan played some wing at the end of 2015 / 2016 season and was pretty good.

The management has been pretty vocal about Bennett staying center.

So one thought that I've never seen discussed (and probably for good reason -ha!) Is moving Backlund to LW.

Backlund-Bennett-Frolik or Backlund-Jankowski-Frolik? ?

Nope. Backlund as had many years to get where he is as center. You definitely switch Janko before Backlund.

I'd still move Bennett to the wing if Jankowski shows he's good at the NHL level.

I don't love any of the solutions that involve Jankowski or Bennett moving to wing. The reason is because we haven't seen what these guys can really do at center with some decent wingers. Generally when you have strong, intelligent, skilled guys who can skate as well as these two and rush the puck with creativity but also bring a complete 200 foot game, you don't want them on the wing standing around with less chance of getting the puck on their stick in motion.

I know some teams do stack their top lines with a center (Draisaitl, Pavelski, Mikael Granlund) but it generally seems to be more of a last resort to move guys to W, and at 21years old (Bennett) and 1 NHL GP (Jankowski) there just isn't enough valid reason yet to not exhaust and explore their development paths as centers. Not when the potential ceiling is so high at the most impactful position.

Especially before you have locked up Backlund. After you have backlund locked up then you can start thinking about it, before that both of these guys need to be prepared like they will be everyday centres. Let Janko start on the 4th line.

Speaking of preseason... What's the schedule this week leading up to next week's split squad preseason kickoff?

I will be interested in how Brouwer looks in camp - I'm thinking he is going to have to make a positive impression on GG if he doesn't want to see his ice time severely curtailed.

Not sure where to ask this/put this but did anyone else catch them say on the Fan this morning that the Flames could have a few PTOs to announce today?

Treliving hinted as much during an interview last week.
