Default Another Union Mess in AB

Recently the Alberta Labour Relations Board ruled that a union can form at your workplace without employees even knowing about it and with 100% of workers being against it. No vote. No nothing. Just send us your money.

This small family business is being acted against by organized labour, apparently because they dared to work non-union alongside unionized shops. Because the employees had previously belonged to a union in another workplace, the new NDP laws allow that union to certify in that workplace even though they didn't want to be unionized, didn't know about the certification, and even tried to cancel their old union memberships.

Just another way to see that the NDP is in bed with Union leadership to ensure that their upper management is able to garnish wages from workers and line their own pockets. They clearly don't care about average workers anymore.

A federal union fraud case is also going on right now where 400K was stolen from members dues but union leadership apparently never even notified it's members.

Quote:
"I'm sure many members don't know about this," said Judy Everson, who works at Statistics Canada. "I'm shocked. I'm disgusted. Do I have a trust in the union? Any faith in the union? Respect for the union? I think that's just gone down the drain for me. Unbelievable. The worst of it is, it's been going on not for months, but years."

If only those employees had the option to decertify if they didn’t want to be in a union... oh wait they do.

Keep these threads coming Crazy_eoj. Your weak over the top attempts at pushing your anti-union narrative help shed light on how desperately misguided the rhetoric used by businesses and union busters can be. The more that kind of stuff is exposed, the better.

Funny, your previous position was you don't have to be in a union if you don't want to. Now it's that you can always quit the union you never agree to join!

Well if this is gonna be the union bashing thread, I want in on the action. They're not just covering up stealing money, they're protecting murderers.

Quote:
After secretly murdering seven patients in an Ontario nursing home, nurse Elizabeth Wettlaufer was fired for making medication errors but was able to keep working thanks to a union grievance and a job reference from her employer, newly released documents show.

The severance and letter were part of a settlement she had reached with Caressant after grieving her firing with the support of her union, the Ontario Nurses’ Association.

“The union went to bat for me”, Ms. Wettlaufer told lawyers who interviewed her in prison last February. Caressant Care, “they had to seal my record, they gave me a monetary settlement, they gave me a letter of recommendation.”

the employees filled in the required forms if I'm reading this right saying that they didn't want to be part of the union and wanted to resign their memberships So the employees wanted nothing to do with the union but it was denied

Oh fuzz, you don’t realize that unions don’t collect dues until a collective agreement is ratified(agreed to). That would allow for plenty of time to obtain the signatures required to decertify and since the ruling states that over 65% of the employees signed the initial certification application it’s safe to say they are more than capable of doing the same for a decertification application.

From what I read of the ruling the issue was that they didn’t do it in a timely manner for the union to be notified (those rules work both ways btw) but there is absolutely nothing stopping them from making the application again and doing so correctly.

Seems pretty cut and dry from the Labour Board, they were members of the Union before the work took place, they did not resign their memberships before beginning the work and the union decided to certify the workplace. They attempted to resign after the certification application was filed.

If you don't want to be represented by a union then don't be a member in good standing with one. They should have resigned before taking the job.

Iggy how does the decertification process work? Is it as simple as the certification process? If these two employees were to sign decertification cards since they represent over 65% they are out?

With the terrible 65% no vote legislation this Union membership being evidence of support of union membership at every employer rule should be eliminated. When used as the equivalent of signing a card to get a vote it's pretty reasonable as a person could voice their objection later through the vote. But as the only sign of support its not good legislation.

Yhe change of legislation to allow autocertification with 65% of cards signed instead of a secret ballot really opens up certification for abuse of process.

This seems reasonable. Large business victim of internal fraud concludes investigation of extent of fraud and notifies board immediately and shareholders in financial statements at year end audit.
