There’s a quite large sample size on Bennett that says he is a serviceable, at best, 3rd line player who goes through stretches of being below replacement level but also the occasional stretch of being a PPG player. Point being he isn’t that good and absolutely should have been traded at least two years ago when he still had value. Of course here anyone who even dared to mention that got absolutely pillared. As most correct opinions do on Calgary Puck
Also, the Canes made it to the ECF last year so don’t know why you’re listing them with two of the worst teams in the league. Actually I do know why but I’ll keep that to myself

Great stats, tips.
How does that implies hypothesis hold up over the data from last year?
Is James Neal out, Milan Lucic in the difference?
(Not including the next sentence)

For a few years now this forum has been divided. A group of us (myself included) have been saying that Bennett is not the player the Flames were hoping to get and that it's time to move on. Then you have the others who (for some crazy reasoning) think that he should be on the top two lines.
It's been time to trade Bennett for a few seasons now. But by all means, lets hold on to him longer so his value continues to dwindle.

Sam looked to be the one at fault in the collision with Jankowski last night, keep your head up Bennett!

I've never seen a player hit his own teammates as much as Bennett.
It is bizarre

The sooner everyone realizes he's a decent 3rd line energy guy that plays fine when he's not trying to hard, and has a game that translates well to the playoffs the better off we'll all be.
so...
Why trade him for peanuts?
Why expect hell magically become a top liner?

My hope is the flames can somehow make a trade for a 2nd line center. I think Backlund , Bennett , Lucic line would be good for a 3rd line checking line.

This. Of course these kinds of players often switch teams a lot during the course of their career it seems.

All that suggests is that he should stay on the 3rd/4th lines.
No more "maybe he will break out now lets give him another chance" nonsense. He doesn't have the intelligence to play in the top half of the forwards. Its been tried, over and over and over, for 4+ years now. It isnt changing.
Its unfortunate that it looks like no one else is able to either, but without question, this guy is not the answer to that problem.

Of course the Flames highest draft pick ever ends up as a bust.
At least Flames have been able to draft good players still with Monahan and Tkachuk, and found a gem in Gaudreau.

Bennett is not going to be worth anything to anyone so I agree that we might as well just keep him around as a bottom sixer.
No more experiments though. Leave the grinder where he belongs.

Im not so sure he wouldnt be coveted by other teams. I mean he wont return a 1st rd pick or anything but in a package he could hold decent value imo.
Guys like him always get a longer leash because scouts remember how good he was coming out of junior and as always, the whole "change of scenery" aspect that a lot of teams hope sparks a guy.
Too soon to be making deals out of desperation right now, but no one should be surprised nor upset if his name starts popping up as the season goes along.

Used to think it was the injury, perhaps a mishandling by GG that stalled or slowed Bennet but unfortunately his brain just doesn't operate at the level needed in the NHL. Looked like a complete game changed in junior, shame.

I agree with most that it isnt looking good in regards to Bennett ever becoming a top6 player.
But I also feel like everyone needs to remember he is younger than Mangiapane, the guy who everyone is wanting to give a top6 opportunity to.
Even tho he has played alot more than Mangiapane and his sample size would suggest he is a 3rd liner I still dont think it is wise to trade him.
Its guys like Frolik that need to be traded as UFAs not Bennett.

Mostly agree. But forget the “not worth much” angle. What he is best at is something the team needs. He fills a role well, and the flames need a top 6 upgrade.

The point of this thread initially wasn't to litigate the pick or to call for Bennett to be traded, the point was to discuss whether the flames had held onto Bennett to the point where his trade value had declined to the where it didn't actually make sense to trade him.
Which I think is essentially unanimous at this point.
Now I am posting saying that Bennett is illustrating that he's a 4th line guy and that having Bennett AND lucic is redundant, especially at a combined 7.5 million.
Something's gotta give.

I don't thin they are redundant at all - pretty different players. They both provide physicality, which is what I assume you are referring to. But to suggest they are redundant would imply that they had enough physicality last year (because they had Bennett). Which is simply not true, IMO.

Bennett needs to get back to playing physical. I don't recall a hit he's thrown yet (other than on Janko...).
Instead he's reaching with his stick and taking dumb penalties. He plays well when he's crushing opponents and causing turnovers and mayhem on the forecheck.

Bennett, Tkachuk and Lucic lead the team with 16 hits. And that matches what I have been watching.
No question that Bennett has taken some bad penalties. But one thing we can definitely say in a positive vain, is that he has been throwing the body.
