True, but it's the worst first. Next year's first could be huge.

Ok, I figured it out.
In the 2020 extension of the CBA, the requirement that a player had to be on the roster at the most recent trade deadline has been removed.
Therefore, Seth Jones is allowed to sign an 8 year extension as of the 28th.
Prior to the 2020 CBA extension, Jones would not have been allowed to sign an 8 year deal until the trade deadline coming up this following season.

Could be EK 2.0
Zadorov-S Jones
Stillman-Murphy
De Haan-Ian Mitchell
C Jones
They could probably move one of Zadorov/De Haan.
I wonder if they go after a big goalie...they could throw a bunch of money at Grubauer and mess with COL.

There's gotta be some trade protections on the 2022 1st. Or else this really could be EK 2.0

Jones just isn’t worth this IMO.
That cap hit, all those top assets.
Seems counterintuitive for an organization that should be rebuilding.
How is he worth 9.5?

That 2022 1st pick that Columbus picked up could really tilt the deal in their favor. That pick could be massive.

That’s a very steep price, does that set up moving Kane or Toews next year to continue that build?

Why would it mean that? Jones is older than Boqvist, and the picks gone make it clear the Hawks are trying to reload rather than rebuild.

It’s their only chance to avoid a full rebuild.
They were a bubble team last year in an exceptionally tough division.
They have added Dach and Toews, and now Jones.
If it doesn’t work, they then go full rebuild..

Norm!
Jones at 9.5, GM's are losing their god damn minds. First Holland then this.

With Kane turning 33 and Toews and his health in the air, coupled with the uncertainty in the crease, they seem like a team that would move veterans for younger players with upside and picks to restock the cupboards. Dach has some growing to do with missing a year, obviously Debrincat is a scorer.

This is horrible for Chicago
Just terrible.
They should be rebuilding. I wouldn’t have done Boqvist and a 2nd. Let alone that package.

The trade would be fine if he had term on his existing cap hit but that extension. my god.
(Assuming the pick next season is protected)

This summer has shown how inept some NHL GMs are. They key in on one specific player, and spend anything to acquire that player, cost be damned.

If they didn't, fans on some random message board might sneer at them for always being in on trades but not actually making them.
