Hasn't organized crime been long associated with baggage handling? Would that extend to cargo storage facilities?

I know this was said in jest, but honestly how does a shipment with that kind of value not have some kind of internal tracking device?? Such an easy and simple thing to do.

That is top notch security. Real good stuff.

We had tighter security than that at Greyhound and all we had was chainlink fence and a re-purposed combination lock from a local High School.

That would only work if the criminals were as stupid as AC and didn't think to look for and disable/remove a tracking device.

You’d think things of that value would have private (armed) security escorting it and remaining with it at all times or maybe I’ve seen too many movie trailers.

I'm sure the accountants have mathed out those costs vs insuring over time, and it was nothing irreplaceable. Cash the insurance cheque and move on.

I mean I really was mostly joking. But when you think about, buddy probably isn't going to stop and in the lobby and unpack his gold, take out the tracker, crush it with his foot, and keep going. That would attract some extra attention even from the quality of staff AC apparently hires.

Maybe you pull in to a parking lot and do it there, but that's another chance for video surveillance etc to get a lead on who it is.

I get armed guards don't make financial sense and would be overkill, and I've sent fairly expensive items (eg jewelry) by mail before without issue. But once we were above $10 MM I'd be tossing a tracker in the bottom of the package just in case. They're not expensive.

Don't you watch movies? by the time they noticed it was stolen the loot was probably split up and gone to different locations.

Man it seems like it would be harder to steal a $50 package from a FedEx outlet seeing at least if you brought them a fraudulent waybill they would ask to see identification.

$20M lost. The current Federal government will likely issue a $150M bailout.

Pretty wild, I bet these guys figured they got away with it. I believe there are still some suspects yet to be arrested and that Air Canada is also getting sued.

It was reported that at least a couple of them are involved in gun trafficking as well.

What does theft over $5000 get you these days? Clearly their plan was good enough to get the gold but when the theft involves this much money you know that it's going to be heavily investigated and that they would eventually find out who was on the inside.

Well they should have sat on it for a long time, but the one guy got caught in the States trafficking the guns and he flipped on the rest. The police investigation lost the truck in Milton.

I'm sure they had more intel by that point than just who was driving the truck.

The police would have had been observing all employees that were involved in the shipment and sooner or later they would have likely connected the dots. For example what could that Siduh guy do with any money he gained or associate with the other culprits in any manner without drawing attention as these people would all be monitored closely for years after.
