Oh, we do. It's possible to feel the emotion of losing of loved one, or empathising with those who have, and still think rationally about how we should deal with people who have committed those acts.

I don't know about that. Losing a close family member to an act of senseless violence would change a person I would think.

Its not irrational to put justice and public safety at a higher priority then empathy. Empathy is an emotion, perhaps it is you who is being emotional.

Snuff, maybe join a victim support group. Talking to people who have gone through what you have may help.

Literally millions of people feel empathy for that man and his situation. I would argue those who don’t are probably psychopaths.

A German tourist, who visited Alberta to celebrate his 60th birthday, still requires 24/7 care and likely will never work again, says the Honorary German Consulate in Calgary.
"He is still very limited when it comes to communications, so he cannot speak and he can't walk … which has a huge impact of course on his life and of everyone else, his family," Honorary Consul Hubertus Liebrecht told CBC News in a phone interview, his first time speaking to media since the incident.
"It's very difficult to really make a reliable forecast at this point but he will never be able to work again, that seems to be sure."
Liebrecht said he's been contacted by many tourism agencies in Germany since the incident, inquiring about safety in Alberta.

I was wondering beyond the GoFundMe donations, will the Gov of Canada or Alberta help with his and his family's costs? Seems like that would be the least that should be done.

I would assume the answer is no. I would also assume foreign governments would do the same for Canadians who are injured abroad by a criminal act.

I guess. It would be my expectation that if I got shot in the States by some nut job that I would be paying out of pocket for that.

I don't quite understand how shooting the driver of a moving vehicle in the head isn't attempted murder.

I'm not a lawyer but I would assume you have to prove intent to get an attempted murder conviction. I know. Shooting at people should always be considered a cogent attempt at murder. But I have to assume that was not proven here. It will be interesting to see the sentence though.

The driving part is the wiggle room, defense would have argued that the shooter never really thought he would kill someone, you can't use that argument if you are standing 10 foot away from them, even if you didn't intend to kill them the law says you can be convicted because a reasonable person should assume it would kill them, but a random shot at a moving car gets a bit fuzzy

I am sure you are very sick of this by now but...
That sounds more like a professional enquiry for work than a casual question...

Der said the teen’s family is quite upset.
“Particularly his grandmother who I spoke to is quite upset. He’s a young guy and he’s been in jail for this. She’s quite upset he’s turning 18 in a week or two and they had other hopes and plans for his 18th birthday rather than being in jail,” said Der.
|
This quote from Balfour Der is terrible. The kids misses his 18th, poor guy. Meanwhile the victim is paralyzed for life and has speech issues.

Yeah, the victim had other plans, too. Like a normal life. **** the shooter.
