He killed it on SNL about 10 years ago.

Speculation on Reddit is that he contracted AIDS in the 90s (most of his early songs are about sexual adventures after all). He then went through a religious conversion period spearheaded by Larry Graham of Sly & the Family Stone to a fervent Jehovah's Witness (also driven by his mother's death).

He had been taking his treatments up until recently when some religious people convinced him he had been cured by God and since then, his health was spiraling.

I heard the news while driving from Tomah WI to Minneapolis. I immediately flipped on The Current 89.3 FM to make sure what I was hearing was true. Sure enough, there was a live report from outside Paisley Park confirming the sad news of Prince's passing.

I'm two blocks from First Avenue as I write these words. Friday and Saturday nights, I will walk that same stage we all know from the movie. The exterior walls of First Avenue are covered with stars to honor the musicians who made an impact on music fans in Minnesota.

Make no mistake: Prince was the brightest star in these Northern skies. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fellow musicians. Prince's music will give consolation and comfort to the collective grief. Godspeed.

Seems a little far fetched, but who knows.

Personally not a fan, but there's no denying his showmanship and musical talent. Supposedly he could play dozens of instruments at a master level and often had to teach the session musicians how to play parts.

I read an interview a number of years ago where Steve Vai cited Prince as being an underrated guitar player.

I can't remember the exact quote, but it was along the lines of "It's mind blowing that he's able to play at that level while signing, dancing, and hitting his marks in such a large choreographed production like his."

There's a bunch of quotes on social media right now (can't really corroborate) but Eddie Van Halen being interviewed in the 80s and saying that Prince might be the best guitar player in the world and Eric Clapton saying similar things.
