It is funny to think about how much people would have bitched about that (presuming 16th would get disrupted a fair bit) and confidently stated how it should be a much faster project that shouldn't have the audacity to impact roads because pipes should totally run somewhere else or something.

The city doesn't have a team on standby 24/7 ready to lay 2 meter pipe? Shirley that exists somewhere within the Administrative Bloat Department that definitely always exists on all public works in a much different way than the private sector because we all say so, so it must be true even though we don't have any evidence other than the fact that everybody says it all the time so of course it's true!

Yeah thats exactly what I said.

Tell him to buck up, we keep getting told the private sector would have this done faster.

What a dumb reply. Who said anything about the replacement parts? I said the city has hired companies and pulled them off other city jobs to do the repairs. The city is no longer doing the repairs themselves. They simply can't handle the scope of this job themselves..which is fine. Didn't need a sparky reply.

What I was told is the city can't handle a job of this scope and really those 2 injuries were from inexperience apparently using too thin a chain that snapped and injured 2 of their workers.

So being safe and using more experienced companies is probably going to take a bit longer but the job will be done right and safely. These companies like standard general (first company who who hired) and LBCO (another company who got hired) have way more experience doing jobs like this.

I’d assume you’d line the old concrete pipe with the steal piece and grout it into place. You’d extend past the defective area far enough.

From an internal pressure point of view the thing only needs to be around 3/8” thick I think. But it would need the concrete to give it strength from external loads. Can failed PCCP still handle external loads?

Edit: https://www.nwpipe.com/app/uploads/2...-ASCE-2012.pdf

This is neat and discusses some of the options and has notes from SAN Diego on how they do it. It sounds like they have done a little of everything but it notes when PCCP is taken out of the ground it’s replaced with steel.

Don’t worry there will be plenty of non-critical work on this line in the future that people will complain about forgetting what can happen.

The main break has now been repaired and crews are filling the excavation.

Attention now turns to 5 other "hot spots."

I'm not going to be surprised if water usage was pretty high this weekend. I know that here in my house my kids needed to finally shower (they haven't showered since Wednesday night) and we had to do 5 loads of laundry. I'm guessing other families are probably in the same position.

Did they not shower because of the water shortage? I don't want to sound rude but that is honestly ridiculous. Cleanliness is much more important than saving water. We aren't at a level where you should stop showering for 4 days.

Does it matter? Kids are germ bags even with showers.

I'm not in Alberta anymore, but is it true you can't wash dishes or clothing but you can still go to a car wash?

Wishing everyone the best through this.

No, there's no restrictions on indoor water use at all. They're asking people to be mindful, but that's it
