IIRC the bonus structure makes a buyout of very little value.
Nope, the key to this deal is the amount of salary retained, the confirmation about the NMC waiver, and the pick (and condition).

Why?? Deal doesn't make sense hockey wise.
Lucic cannot play NHL level hockey anymore.

But by signing Ferland, they still have Neal. I may not like the Lucic deal, but at least it gets rid of Neal.

Same term remaining on both, four more years.
Lucic cap hit is $250,000 more, but it sounds like the Oilers are retaining at least that much, so it will actually cost the Flames less.
Lucic has a full NMC for all four years and a limited NTC for the final two seasons, but we'll see what happens with those. Knowing what we know of Treliving's opinion of NMCs, you'd have to think he'd want Lucic to waive it permanently, if possible.

It’s a major dice roll but imagine the Oiler salt if Talbot puts up <2.50 >.925 and Lucic gets 20/20.

Very different thing because they couldn't afford both Neal and Ferland.

If Lucic can put up at least 10 more points than last year, and the retention is decent, I won't hate it. But I'm not holding my breath

I wonder if the Ferland signing influenced Tre to make this deal.
the thought of Lucic/Kassian and Ferland in the same division must have terrified him, especially with the abuse Gaudreau took last season.

I hope this is a typo and it's 6,000,000 retained.

The flames don't have the cap room to give Ferland that contract though. They couldn't just magically disappear neal and give Ferland that deal.
I disliked this proposal from the onset, but I can see why Tre and co did it, especially if Neal was unhappy and had a poor attitude about coming back (which I think is very likely given his prolonged absence last season, the rumor that he had taken his stuff out of the locker room for a period, getting healthy scratched in the POs). Neal was also unwilling to adapt his game to the grind and punch style once it was clear he couldn't be an offensive contributor. That is not an issue with Lucic.
The NMC clarity will give me enormous relief. I think I could actually end up really liking this trade.
