What's wrong with going 0-81-1?
Isn't the whole point trying to land that next franchise cornerstone? Seems like they're doing a magnificent job.

I’d love to watch the sharks for 82 games a season for 7 seasons until they are above .500 again

With Smith and a top pick this year, they will be fun to watch next year.

They need to adjust how the lottery draft works.
Having teams rewarded for intentionally sucking devalues the league.

With the exception of goaltending, they actually have a very good prospect base. several high end players. When they sent Thrun down earlier, I wondered what they were doing, but in retrospect I think that they are protecting their best players from a losing environment. I'm surprised that they brought up Eklund so early.

They may have a bunch of fancy prospects. But they also have scored 10 goals in 10 games.
So there’s that.

Sad part is that what they're doing is what they're supposed to do - tank, improve and compete for an actual championship. It's better than decades of mediocrity.

So how would bad teams get better without access to the best players ?
They have already tweaked it so many times.
How would you expect SJ to be better this year ?

Vlasic has been bad for a few seasons now, so this isn't new. They're obviously trying to be bad, but they brought in 2 goaltenders who have been terrible before this season, a bunch of reclamation projects that haven't worked, and after Couture and Hertl, their top forward is Alex Barabanov.
I mean, look at their defense:
Vlasic
Burroughs
Ferraro
Benning
Knyzhov
Rutta.
There's one top-4 guy there. 1. The rest are all 6-7-8 type guys.

Lol didn't San Jose have Calgary's number a season or two ago? I remember the Flames couldn't beat 'em.

apart from them being in the same division, I have no issues with how they are approaching things. They were a perennial playoff team for a long time and haven't drafted top 3 in 25 years ... I have little problem with a team like that bottoming out at some point.

Keep the draft order how its always been, but give higher lottery odds to teams that just missed the POs.
Teams that try should definitely be rewarded more.

I would have randomized top 16 picks for all non playoff teams for the first round. Maybe weighted against playoff success for the previous 7 years. And reduced by top 3 picks in that 7 year span.
Then rounds 2-7 follow the inverse standings with no lottery.

Doesn't help that Couture hasn't suited up for them this season. He's at least a legit top line forward.

It'll be great if the Flames is the second worst team going in the 2024 lottery and actually snatch the top overall pick from the Sharks.
