Gaudreau is 27 and is signed for $6.75 for 2 more seasons.

OEL is 29 and is signed for $8.25 for 7 more seasons.

Absolutely massive difference in situations lol

The OEL contract didn't look great when it was signed and the cap was expected to rise. Now that it will be stagnant? It's a disaster. The Flames just cut their payroll by 20%. I don't see why they would bring on a player owed 32 million over the next 3 years without some massive incentive (which his play is not).

Forget the cap number. OEL is owed $32 mil over the next 3 years - effectively a $10+M player.

For example, a team trading for JG gets him for 2 years @ $5 per if they trade for him after signing bonuses are paid.

Cash paid out is the real value for a lot of teams.
Especially for Arizona, which couldn't even pay their players on time.

OEL is a negative asset for Arizona and they should be happy if they can give him away for free.

The difference is Gaudreau is not a 29 year old defenseman who clearly lost a step this season, nor is he signed for the next 7 seasons at $8 million.

Players decline. Most decline hard. Flames fans should know this better than most.

To willingly take on this contract is completely asinine. The cap isn't going up for a long time. OEL is only going to get worse, and his AAV will remain the same.

Cap space and salary have never been more important than they are now. This is a move that could cripple a franchise.

If that is the best rebuttal you can come up with, it's time to accept that your position is a reach.

The only way an OEL trade works in my opinion is if a 3rd team is involved eating some salary for an asset.

Arizona trades OEL and an asset to "Team X", retaining 15% ($6,712,500 in real dollars and $1,275,000 against the cap).
"Team X" then trades OEL to Calgary, retaining an additional 15% ($6,712,500 in real dollars and $1,275,000 against the cap). This would make his cap hit 5.95m which would be much more palatable.

That said, I don't see Arizona retaining more than 10% and I think it would be extremely difficult to get another team to retain anything.

Kuemper or a retained Kessel make far more sense to me for both teams than OEL.

Retaining salary for 7 years is a non-starter for most teams. And I would imagine is pretty much an impossibility for the Yotes.

OEL still has long term Nik Lidstrom potential through the duration of his contract. He just needs a change.

lol. You mean he could be one of the all time greats at his position, holding his form into his late 30's? Where do I sign up!

Re-sign Brodie for Pete’s sake and give Kylington a long look.

OEL has $39.5 million due to him over the next 4 seasons, much of it in the form of lump sum bonuses.

Which ownership group in this league is taking that on? Who would do this to themselves?

He said Nick Lidstrom potential. You see what that Arizona sun does to a person?

How does adding a defenseman with a massive contract who is past his best before date help with that?

That's easy to say when you're the one shipping him off!

Lol, have you been wearing welding glasses when watching OEL play? he's routinely been the worst defensive player on the team, he couldn't tape Lidstrom's stick.

Define massive contract and best before date. Last I checked, Gio was just coming in to his own at that age.

You gotta pay to get. And if Tre continues to bargain shop this team will continue to suck. Bargain goalie out of Europe, Hamonic because of a cheap contract, Austin Czarnik, Derek Ryan, Rieder .... Yeah, here come the Flames.

ROR, Mark Stone, Bishop, Hall, Lehner are just a few recent players on the move that we didn't want. Frustrating.
