Too expensive, too long of term, and unknown exactly what we will get from him now or future. Hard pass from me.

This....is a pretty solid prediction actually.

lol, I'm assuming at some point after Bouwmeester was signed the hockey news probably had a cover with him, Phaneuf and Regehr on it proclaiming they were the best D in hockey. Of course as we know all three were gone by 2013 and JBo was signed in 2009.
It seems more like sour grapes than an actual prediction.

To be fair how many times have the Flames made an acquisition that was followed by media trumpeting that they did in fact have the best defense only to have that squad (predictably?) fall flat. Twice in a little over a decade for sure. With all this OEL talk I could easily see that happening. I think its a little sour grapes and a little history repeating itself.
What's that saying about being doomed to repeat history?

I remember all 3 of them were predicted to make the Canadian Olympic roster. None did.

The flames are most definitely NOT even thinking about parting ways with their captain to make room for an overpaid swede who has a long history of losing LOL

I wish they’d just put us out of our misery already and get this awful, nightmare of a deal done. You know they are gonna do it just because that’s what Treliving does MOST of the time.

What??? How many older high priced d-men did Tre bring in during his tenure?
Also after looking at his contract I can’t see any team trading for him during this flat cap time unless sending huge money back.

How about a situation where Phoenix retains 50% for the next three years? Still tons of back end risk but I imagine by then either league revenues rebound or there’s might be some opportunity to do some non cap hitting buyouts to reset to the new normal.
In this situation I think a first or a second and prospect is fair.

If they retain on the contract it's for every year remaining, you can't retain for X amount of years and then have the retention just stop.

No 7 year contracts for declining veterans please. Not for Ekman-Larson, not for Hall. 90% of the time these turn into anchors somewhere around year 2-4.
Only a team on the cusp of winning the cup should take on these contracts.

The GM in Minnesota (Fenton) who was on the job for a year reportedly did not understand that salary retention could not be for a portion of a contract instead of the entire duration.
I think the Flames were in the process of taking him to the cleaners at the deadline prior to Fenton being made to understand this particular piece if information.

As much as some of us like to Condemn the Hamonic trade today. The reason the Flames paid that hefty price was because at the time Hamonic was still pretty young and he was thought to be on a high value contract.
Outside of signing England which I will always say proved to be one of his best free agent signings, he's generally been after defenceman who are 26 and younger.
Oddly enough Jason Gregor here in Edmonton used to always go on about how good Hamonic was and why the Oilers should trade for him. He used to do the same with Ekman-Larsson. That alone gives me trepidation on the player.

The good news is Boston is in on OEL according to both Marek and Friedman.
With his NMC, doesn’t matter if we want him more or can offer a better package. Player gets to pick. And I’m sure he picks Boston over us.
Skip to l 1:02 where you hear them mention Boston connected to OEL

Hold up. Are there reports that Bennett wants out? Or are you reporting this?

The price was too high in hindsight but Treliving likely had a reasonable belief that the pick wouldn’t be as high as it was. The Flames were tracking to have a pick around 21 IRRC.

It would be so Flames to give up a first and prospects for a declining overpaid D-man. Hard pass on OEL and Hall.

This is correct. I remember getting that issue in the mail and getting hyped. Phaneuf was gone three months later.
