Just thought about it a bit more, Amazon setting up shot in Canada - or even Mexico - would be a huge political boondoggle for the current US administration, and would have huge ripple effects in Congress. Bezos said he wants to build in North America, and leaving the US to give away 50,000 jobs would be a damn near crisis for Trump's MAGA campaign.

The savings on wages would also be taken into consideration. For all the complaining people do about our $15/hour minimum wage, when you consider this wage is being lobbied by a massive movement across the states and will likely be legislated in a many if not all parts of that country, a $15/hour minimum wage in Canadian dollars probably doesn't sound so bad for businesses like Amazon who thrive on low employee compensation.
Edit: On a side note. Welcome back Delgar

Looking at their RFP about the only thing Calgary doesn't meet strictly speaking is direct access to Washingon DC and New York (but yes to Seattle and San Francisco). But we do have good access to both cities via several airline hubs and most US cities would also not have direct flights to all four cities unless they happened to be where an airline hub is located. So that would eliminate many similar cities to Calgary if that were the case.
One great argument in favor of locating in Canada would be much lower health care coverage costs for Amazon as they essentially get rid of that cost entirely due to our taxpayer funded system rather than privately funded in the U.S. That would amount to a pretty large amount of money given the number of employees they are talking.

Could the city not strike up a deal with WestJet to make that happen for the RFP? They would have years to work out the logistics side of things

Both WestJet and Air Canada have direct flights to New York (Newark, in AC's case).
I'm sure if there was a demand, they'd start up direct flights to DC too. I doubt there are very many cities in North America that currently have direct flights to all four of those cities, except for the few hub cities.

Had an idea!
|
50,000 people would create a lot of demand for flights. Calgary would have to do a lot of stuff different.

Yeah, WestJet flies into JFK and Air Canada goes to Newark. Can't do LaGuardia because of the distance limitation that airport has imposed on it (there are a few exception cities to that rule, I think DEN for one).

Wouldn't it also be a huge plus our proximity to foremost which is the only legal drone testing zone in Canada currently?

I work in Calgary and we aren't entitled to either unless we use vacation time so not sure what the issues would be.

I have heard stories of Amazon corporate culture before, at tech conferences throughout my career. It's ruthless as the story suggests, and Jeff Bezos is basically a cult of personality. I guess it's working for him.
