Also, a flight to Calgary is about an hour . . . It's a four or five hour flight to the East Coast and a big time change. That must be taken into consideration.

Then again, Amazon is a 24/7 business so probably not haha.

I think your sorely underestimating how much you would have to pay westjet to change their schedule like that.

That one hurts. Calgary offers limited flights a day to D.C., none of which are direct. Most require two stops and are an all day trip. Calgary having to go through hubs for trips almost everywhere makes travel tough.
LOL... No you're completely wrong.
My wife and I make that trip very frequently. All trips are usually under 7 hours with only one stop.

I'm sure if this ever happened, there would be a high-enough demand for WestJet and/or Air Canada to add daily flights to DC.

Yeah, of all of the potential shortfalls of a Calgary bid, the flight connection issues seems to be about the easiest one to remedy.

Who are you flying? I took the data directly off Travelocity. The quickest average was like 7:30-7:45 with a stop of 60-90 minutes. Add in the time zone difference, and you're a full work day.

I see where I screwed up. I selected cheapest rather than all options. I just re-ran the queries and got a few more single stop options. Average still seems to be in the 7:30-8:00 range for a single stop. 10:00-11:00 for the "cheapest" multi-stop.

Definitely meets the "convenient" criteria.

Well.... Flying cross continent takes time. Search for flights from DC to Seattle and you might be shocked how long it takes, even with a non stop flight. 7 hours to fly with one stop isn't bad at all.

I don't disagree it is in the same "realm" of amount of time. But having a connection, layover, and customs clearance is going to make that margin even larger, and less convenient.

I can't see this project going to a Canadian city, and by some miracle it does, it would have to be Toronto. Vancouver is just too close to Seattle, which makes little sense, but that would be my second option.

It'll be somewhere on the east Coast or Midwest. Chicago seems to fit the bill nicely, but so would any of the metropolitan areas out there. They all make infinitely more sense than plunking it in Canada.

I do think you're right. If we're operating in a vacuum, Calgary doesn't get this. But I do think this will boil down to incentives that Amazon receives. That's where a place that's not as attractive, like Calgary, can close the gap. As much as Amazon might want this to go to a bigger market, I just don't see a place like Boston or DC tripping over themselves to back up the Brinks truck the same way Calgary would.

By the way, there's nothing at all convenient about flying out of Chicago.

^ I am going to disagree with that, and think that there will be lots of cities ready to offer amazon the chance to set up shop in their city for free.

I just think if you owned a company, and were going to set up a second office, why would you set it up mere hours away from your real head office, and why would you not set it up in a country where the vast majority of your revenue is generated and out of the time zone where the vast majority of your customers are?

to me it would make sense for a city making a pitch for this office to somehow set up a special queue at the airport for amazon employees so they can bypass the typical wait times the rest of us have and work with an airline to be able to quickly adjust capacity/available aircraft.

to me it would be stunning to see a canadian city even make the top three finalists.

Indy of mine mentioned how a Hutterite colony has apparently won the bid.

Anyone have a link to confirm this story.

Wonder if they will put a blanket over some of the employees while a stranger brings in a new corporate culture
