Come to Vancouver, it’s right as rain
Living in Vancouver not quite what its cracked up to be?
Quote:
Vancouver officials have admitted that, after weeks of relentless, driving rain, the city has been exposed as the unremarkable mid-sized Canadian municipality it actually is.
"We've done our best to market the city as a sunny Pacific paradise where people ride bikes all year round, frolic on the beach or in outdoor pools, or laze the days away on café patios," said Mayor Gregor Robertson, hanging a pair of cycling shorts over the radiator. "But after the past few weeks of rain, even I have to admit we've all been living a lie. We're really nothing more than a wet Winnipeg with an exponentially more severe housing and affordability crisis."

Rain and housing are the top two reasons that'd keep me from moving back to the lower mainland.

As someone who's lived the past several years in Vancouver, it's true that it's really not all it's cracked up to be. Arguably not as attractive as some major US cities (depends on your priorities, really - US culture isn't for me), and most definitely not on the same tier as a lot of places in Europe.
But, I know this may not be a popular opinion here, I still wouldn't trade it for going back to Calgary. There's a lot of value in not having to scrape off your vehicle in -30 degree weather and drive to work on a sheet of ice. And the summers (short as they are) can't be beat.
Disclaimer, I say this as someone who rents a modest apartment in Kits and has no intention of paying $1 million+ for a house any time soon.

Honestly, it just depends how rain affects you. If you find it miserable and depressing, you probably shouldn't live in a temperate rainforest. Rain doesn't bother me at all, personally.

I moved to Van from Calgary a year ago. It's funny, I think the downsides of each city weather-wise are exaggerated by each other. It's not as cold in Calgary as people in Van tend to think. It's not as rainy here as Calgarians say.
I go back and forth on it. It's nice I can go through most of winter with a light coat and an umbrella. I do miss the snow and the sun sometimes though. March-November though, there aren't many better cities in the world.
It's very international, almost everyone I know is from a different country. All them think this is the best place in the world. Stupid expensive though. It has to come to a head sometime. When people can't afford to live in your city, they can;t afford to buy things in your city.
That article is hilarious. Tourists complaining of rain in November. "The post cards were all sunny!" Yeah, they were all taken in the summer, idiot. Do some research before you travel somewhere.

The much bigger issue here is housing. It's getting to the point were young people are moving away as noone can afford to start families. A large amount of the housing is vacant and owned by foreigners. The corrupt city officials, unions, and developers made a short term profit though....

Seasonal affect disorder is a real thing out there during the rainy season for sure. If you can't hack 3 or 4 months of no sun and just gray skies and rain, the coast isn't for you. Some folks think they can hack it and then live in it and it gets to them. But I'll be damned if that 3-4 month sad fest isn't a fair payoff for what it's like to live there for the rest of the year. There's nothing else like it in this country. It's kind of funny to see the Vancouver mayor kind of peel back the sunny sales pitch curtain and show more of what it really is.

Not young but I just moved away from Victoria for those reasons. And good consistent work is harder to come by these days out there too.
And yes, the housing market is a gong show. Can't rent a room for less than $800 that isn't a dumpster.

The rain didn't affect me at all the 5 1/2 years I lived out there. It was the cost of living and lack of jobs in my field that forced me to leave.

The traffic is enough to stop me from going back, notwithstanding the rain (but when your ex moves back there with your son, it may change my mind)

Not that I disagree with much in that article ... but there's no way that's real.
