Icon36 Rangers buyout Shattenkirk

Shattenkirk had a NMC, so did not require waivers before being boughtout

Brett Cyrgalis
@BrettCyrgalis
Now the window open, and a source says that #NYR have bought out Kevin Shattenkirk.

David Pagnotta @TheFourthPeriod
Can confirm the Rangers have indeed bought out the contract of D Kevin Shattenkirk, as @BrettCyrgalis first reported.

David Pagnotta
@TheFourthPeriod
Buyout occurred prior to today’s 5pm buyout window close.

The cap implications:

Next year's cap hit of $6.083 mil is going to hurt

Fascinating. Wonder if this breaks the UFA defensemen floodgates.

Rangers having a great off season then do something like this. They aren't ready to compete. This buyout will handcuff them to resign guys like kreider next summer. So why not trade kreider and namesnikov and gain assets. They are in rebuild mode so just doesn't make sense

Did Brodie's value just go up or down?

Down, I would think. Shattenkirk can probably be had for relatively cheap without giving up any assets. He still is a serviceable Top 4 offensive D IMO. This probably doesn't help Gardiner either.

Don't know about Brodie's, but Shattenkirk's just went up among multiple teams I would imagine. He's dropped off but not entirely useless. Getting him for a much less contract makes him more attractive.

Shattenkirk's possession stats look pretty friggin' impressive, the dude just didn't produce offensively when weighted against his huge contract.

Number wise, he still looks like a player who could help teams, but you have to deploy him accordingly by the looks of it (63.6 oZS% last season)

6M+ cap hit for next year in the buyout is absolutely crazy though.

My guess is he ends up in Tampa on a cheap 1 year deal to try and get his value back up.

Hopefully that guess that Bingo had of Brodie for Kreider ends up being true.

Paying Dan Girardi 3.6M next year too, 1M the next 3 years

Multiple teams will be interested. I can see the Oilers, Devils, Canadiens, Lightning etc. inquiring. He probably gets the best opportunity in Edmonton or Montreal though.

They're trying to fast-track their rebuild.

Geez. Didn't they just sign him a couple years ago? Didnt realize he'd been bad enough to get bought out.

Oilers have 2.4M is cap space. Smith alone has 1.75M (realistically 1M since it is not tied to them making the playoffs) in bonuses that they have to account for. They don't have room to do much to do much.

The bonuses can slide to next year. Not that that helps them all that much, they're still a mess.

That being said, Shattenkirk probably wants to increase his value for a follow-up contract and Edmonton is not a good place to do that.

It is however, a great place to sign for lots of money and suck!

Would be funny to see a bunch of bonuses slide to next year so when they buyout Neal they can add another 1.5M+ to their dead cap space. it would be creeping towards 10% of their total cap.
