Those picks aren't too likely to be very far apart from each other at all.

Seems to be more about the cash savings than anything else.

McElhinney is a 35+ contract. Have to think they start with him as the backup otherwise they wouldn't get relief.

This deals leaves the Lightning with about 11M to sign Point, Erne and a spare forward. Based on the trade they must think they can do it with less because they lose a decent chunk of cap-relief from Callahan being removed from LTIR.

EDIT: McElhinney might get relief if sent down, a bit different than what Capfriendly's CBA FAQ says.

Yeah, they traded what is likely to be the 150-155th pick for the 156-160th pick.

They are each almost certainly going to select the exact same player regardless.

Seems pointless, other than optics.

I wonder if the Lightning will buy out Condon? I'm not sure how the savings would play out over burying him in the minors

McElhinney is also a good goalie now. Tampa obviously signed him to be the backup.

Wouldn't TB be better off having Callahan on the IR with no cap hit? What's the motivation for them to have a $1.3M cap hit for a goalie sitting in the minors?

Didn’t Calgary buy out Ryan Murphy a couple of seasons back just after acquiring him? Plus Erne is arbitration eligible, so the second buy out window for Tampa Bay should be opening up soon.

The cap hit as per cap friendly for a buyout will be 400k for year 1 and 1 million for year 2

The Flames bought out Ryan Murphy after trading for him during the 1st buyout window which starts from June 15 or 48 hours after the Stanley Cup is awarded (which ever is later) until June 30th. There is no restrictions on which players you can buyout during this period.

The 2nd buyout window starts 3 days after the teams final arbitration case is settled or awarded and runs for 48 hours. During the 2nd buyout window only players whose cap hit is over $3.455 million AND were on the team's reserve list as of the last trade deadline can be bought out.

Because Condon was not on the Lightning's reserve list at the last trade deadline, they cannot buy out Condon in the 2nd window.

Anyways Tampa had only one arbitration case which was Pacquette. He signed on July 5 which means Tampa had the 2nd window open from July 8th to July 10th. The 2nd window is over for them.

Erne never filed for arbitration.

As I understand it LTIR players do have a cap hit, you can just replace their value when the season starts.

In the off-season, I believe that teams can go 10% over the cap, but that would include Callahan's salary. So that might mean that Tampa couldn't sign Brayden Point until October, if they still had Callahan?
