Flames still in contract negotiations with Lazar
Kristen Anderson @KdotAnderson
#Flames are still in negotiations w/Curtis Lazar, although he's got the opportunity to talk to other teams. But #Flames are still in contact with his representatives. Chose not to qualify him based upon what his QO number was and any potential ramifications from an arb case.
Kristen Anderson @KdotAnderson
They'd rather have a negotiated settlement and negotiated agreement than go down that path of arbitration. Treliving: "We're still talking with his representative. Not saying we will or won't get anything done. But we're hopeful we can come to an agreement."

He's okay as a 13/14 forward if his salary comes in under 750k

I'm not the biggest Lazar fan but he's a strong skater, a big body, and he can make some decent passes on the rush. I liked him as a 4th liner near the end of 2018, even if I suspect that's his ceiling.

So much effort spent on such a marginal player.

What is there to like or dislike about Lazar signing a cheap deal that will (more than likely) see him cruise around the AHL unless he magically finds his touch?
It's not like he'd be taking an AHL spot from our plethora of worthy forward prospects.

What's not to like? The Flames still need bodies in the AHL; he's not going to be playing in Calgary.

I suppose, but I think it'd be better for Lazar to move on to an organization that has more room for him. I guess it's a non-factor from a Flames perspective but it felt like the right time to cut ties.

Lazar is a great AHL player and fantastic person by all accounts. Bringing him back to play in Stockton and be a leader on and off the ice is fine by me.

Lazar is great depth to have - strong skater, can be physical, great on the forecheck and fairly resposible defensively. Plus, it is well known he is a really great character and popular in the room. Won't complain from not playing. Hope he re-signs for something cheap.

Give him 1 year, 1 way and 1.05M or whatever is the max amount they can bury in 19-20.

Wouldn't be surprised if Lazar actually took a much lower NHL salary here to make it easier for him to be called up. Seem to remember his higher NHL salary being an impediment to that before

He's only been with the Flames for 2 years. Nothing wrong with keeping quality individuals around especially as he seemed a lot better this year than last. Really owned his AHL role.
It's not like he's Wotherspoon spending half a decade in the organization doing SFA.

Man, it's only been two years? I thought time was supposed to speed up as people get older...
Alright, I can see the positives here. Guess I'm still just recovering from the Lazar-Stajan-Brouwer line. As long as they don't try to give him Hathaway's spot, this is fine.

He probably won't play in the NHL, and if he does it is because he improved his game and he'll likely be at a cheaper price than even this year. Because they didn't go with his qualifying offer indicates they didn't think he was worth that much money. They're not going to sign him for more than his current contract, but very likely less.

The Flames have plenty of room for Lazar. Stockton is hardly brimming with young forward talent and the likes of Quine, Lomberg, Hathaway, Dube and even Mangiapane are not impossible bottom 6 players to unseat for a roster spot.
