A Canadian tale as old as time. Once this is over we'll get to do it all over again with Subs, replacements coming long after most of the quality experience is gone

Looks like we'll finally have a conclusion to this particular ####show

Canada will announce on Monday that Lockheed Martin Corp is the preferred bidder in a multi-billion dollar competition to supply 88 new fighter jets, said an industry source close to the file.

Was always the right choice. While I really like the Gripen if you're going to have a small air force, you want the cutting edge

I always hoped 'Zeppelin Corp' was in with a shout.
They may not be fast, they may not be particularly stealthy and they present a rather large, wallowing target, but by God the Zeppelin is just what the RCAF needs!

Yeah, I posted it in the Federal Government thread. But its still a ways away. Even when we sign a contract which is probably a ways off, we're at the bottom of the manufacturing list as Lockheed Martin has really sold a lot of these jets once they went operational and even saw combat in Israel.
I like the concept of the JAS-39E. But if Canada is looking at a 4 squadron airforce, and to have the jets around for 40 years. The F-35 just seems like a better choice, especially since the battlefield is more digital and over the horizon killing then yanking and banking.
With the cost of manufacturing dropping due to a massive influx of adoption of the F-35, and Canada's ability to see some good economic benefits to the buy, the F-35 just makes sense.
I feel bad for Saab, they are losing deals to Lockheed Martin when they go head to head with the 39E.

So after the Libs declared they would not buy the F-35, they dragged their feet on buying anything (except some old obsolete F-18s from Australia). Now since they see what just occurred in Ukraine they quickly declare it will be the F-35…good grief what a complete joke that was. If they would of pulled their heads out of their collective asses we could of had them by now.

If Canada indeed buys all these jets, does it make sense to look at a carrier? Would a Navy with just a carrier and a bunch of subs be sufficient?

Everyone knew it would always be the F-35s.
Liberal voters won't even care about the incompetence that the Trudeau government has shown.

There is no way we have the personnel or expertise to maintain a carrier.

You'd want a large force of surface escorts as well, plus support ships. Untold billions of dollars to spin up a carrier task force from where we sit right now. It's a wet dream but I'd easily bet my life savings without thinking twice that we never see another Canadian carrier in my life time.

I wonder. Spain is a comparable country IMO with a slightly larger population, social healthcare, but smaller GDP, and they have a carrier.
Canada's population is likely to continue grow while western European countries have stagnant growth.
Maybe time for Canada to change gears?

What about a really, really big Zeppelin that we could zip-tie the Jets to?
Now that'd be brilliant.
We could certainly maintain and crew a Zeppelin.

Jesus we could actually have these on the tarmac by now if we pulled the trigger way back when.

And the jets could make the zeppelins go faster while attached to them.

Military ethos should always be about adaptability.
The thought of 4 Jets zip-tied to a Zeppelin hitting the afterburners or whatever just conjures up hilarious imagery of letting air out of a balloon in conjunction with the scene from Spaceballs when they engage "Ludicrous Speed."
"Dont shoot down their Zeppelin....they're just Canadians..."

It will be interesting to see what the cost difference is between then and now.

I bet its 50% or more, I imagine they'll try to bury that increase by omitting the op costs or something.

Looks like its 88 fighters at a cost of 8.6 billion.
IIRC, originally the deal under Harper was for 80 fighters at about 9.6 billion. So we're getting 8 additional planes for a billion dollars less.
So originally it was 112.5 million per copy.
Now its about 98 million dollars a copy. But that's rough math

I think the original Harper deal was something like 65 planes, but I could be wrong. My memory is pretty crap these days

I'm glad the decision has finally occurred. One silver lining to the long delay is we should be getting Block 4 or possibly later machines, which are a significant upgrade.
As I understand it, many of the early machines can't even be economically upgraded to Block 4.
