Yes, veterans and first round picks from the most-recent draft. Gryba, Froese, and Davidson are the only vets on Team Otto with the required experience.

I expect the regular roster to be pretty evenly split between the two games. Probably the Monahan and Ryan lines in Calgary and the Backlund and Jankowski lines in Victoria. On D, it will likely be Gio and Brodie here with Hamonic and Hanifin going to Victoria.

Not surprisingly, former-Royal, Matthew Phillips will be playing in the Victoria game: https://calgaryherald.com/sports/hoc...5-8459e00ecc36

I thought the veterans were mostly sticking together this year?

They are for the on ice sessions in camp, but when the preseason (important for split squad) games are played, there are a minimum number of veteran players required in the lineup

If i had to wager a guess, Dube and Reider get the jobs of the rest of the guys fighting for a spot.
I'm fine with whatever. If one or two of the PTOs win a spot..........fantastic. I just want the best team out there. I was just guessing Eat Bread would be on the 3rd line, but if he's surpassed by others........fine with me. Let the games begin!

I thought he looked faster than expected live yesterday. But I thought I might be comparing him to others who might not be skating at their fastest due to pre-season.

Looks like no cuts today. Mangiapane added to Group 1

The "main" group is 24 skaters. So 4-5 cuts. DSP is an easy one for me right now. I think Rinaldo has outplayed Reider to some extent, but Quine has made a real push. Dube has made the team. That means Czarnik is on the bubble - Mangiapane would have to be pretty bad IMO.

MacDonald has to be giving Stone a scare. He's been pretty solid. I confess to not having noticed Kylington's play so far, but I think he's done enough last year to stick.

DSP just always looks so......uninterested? Maybe thats just his personality, but it never looked like he was having any fun out there or driving hard

So much talk about Rieder signing but is there room?

Gaudreau
Monahan
Lindholm
Tkachuk*
Backlund
Frolik
Bennett
Jankowski
Lucic
Mangiapane
Dube
Ryan
Czarnik

Assuming Tkachuk signs it's Czarnik vs Rieder I guess.

One would have to think about that. Sending Czarnik down and replacing him with a league minimum player would save a bit of cap space, all other things being equal.

With the Flames only at 42 of 50 contracts I suppose there's a chance they could sign a PTO or two to a two way contract, bolster the Heat and have some acquisition cost free depth.

I don't think Smith Pelley has done enough to stand out, but no harm in the two way deal if he wants to start in the AHL for example.

In the few preseason games thus far, Reider looks like one of those guys that does everything pretty well away from the puck. In terms of finish though, Czarnik is miles ahead of him.

You'd think a team like Edmonton has to be looking at MacDonald or Rinaldo. I'd say Reider too but obviously that's not happening.

Aside from last year, the stats say otherwise. Plus, in the role they are likely to take (fourth line fill-in), Rieder has the advantage in almost every way.

I think Rinaldo is making an impression - he had some nice hits out there, and his forechecking ability should fit really nicely with Peters' system.

Reider drew penalties thanks to this speed and effort.

I think one of these get signed. Flames will be overall a bit quicker this season over last with an expected full season out of Dube too.

Dube = faster than Hathaway.
Lucic = faster than Neal.
Rinaldo/Reider = faster than Lomberg/Peluso/Rychel/probably Quine.

I always saw Rieder as a replacement for if they have to move Frolik. He's basically a poor man's Frolik but also at a quarter of the price.

I don't see the need to sign him if they are keeping Frolik.

Rinaldo on the other hand brings something that the Flames don't have that much of other than Bennett and Lucic.
